"As the fate of Terri Schiavo was decided and then carried out, the enigma of Jewish liberalism came again to the fore. What accounts for Jews whose idea of dying "with dignity" included this incapacitated Florida woman being dehydrated to a state of living mummification like the ghoulish images of Nazi death-camp survivors? Jewish Democrats in Congress and the Florida legislature led the rushed struggle to fend off efforts to save the brain-damaged woman. Meanwhile, I had a chance to personally gauge Jewish sentiment when Seattle's largest Conservative synagogue graciously invited me to speak on an unrelated subject — my new book, Why the Jews Rejected Jesus, which acknowledges the cultural contributions of Christianity. In the Q&A period, the synagogue's rabbi asked what contributions I had in mind. When I mentioned the campaign by Christians to rescue Terri Schiavo from being killed by her husband — Michael, who claimed she'd want it this way — the crowd reacted with a sharp intake of breath, shocked murmurs as if I'd said a kind word about the Spanish Inquisition. To add to the sense of values gone topsy-turvy, Mrs. Schiavo's ordeal was climaxing over the festival of Purim. Parallels with the Purim story, the Biblical book of Esther, leap out at you. In both, a vigorously determined personality (Haman, Michael Schiavo) seeks to take the life of an innocent or innocents (the Jews, Mrs. Schiavo) with the aid of a high government official (King Ahashuerus, Judge Greer) while the people (Persia's Jews, America's Christians) weep, fast, and don sackcloth. Simultaneously, a protagonist (Queen Esther, Governor Bush) closely linked to the head of state contemplates intervening. The mystery of why Jewish liberals feel as they do about Mrs. Schiavo's case was underlined by a concurrent news story — about the California judge who reportedly spoke to prosecutors in death-penalty cases about excluding Jews from juries because, "No Jew would vote to send a defendant to the gas chamber" — the memory of Nazi gas chambers being too vivid to allow it. So, Jews would freely permit a woman who did nothing wrong to be diminished to the condition of a death-camp victim, while they could never do so to a person who committed a grievous crime. Call in the psychologists. By way of explanation, a theory recommends itself, one that I have heard before from radio commentator Dennis Prager among others. It is that Jewish liberals are misshapen by centuries of being humiliated by Christians. Today, though we live in the most Jewish-friendly country in history, it's as if we're still back in medieval France or Germany. Whatever Christians favor — the death penalty, saving Terri Schiavo, curbing abortion, whatever — we must reject out of self-respect. I was not sold on this theory until I received a mass e-mail from the Jewish Federation here in Seattle. A stolidly conventional communal group, the Federation has got the idea in its head of promoting homosexual dalliances. The e-mail celebrated the launch of "Bashert" (the Jewish term for a divinely fated romantic relationship), a Federation program "seek[ing] to create a fully welcoming and inclusive Jewish community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Jews." Bashert's inaugural event would feature as a speaker the assistant rabbi of the Conservative (which in Jewish parlance means "liberal") synagogue whose members had been so disturbed by my thanking Christians for trying to preserve Terri Schiavo's life. Is it a coincidence that our Federation was seized with enthusiasm for homosexual matchmaking just as the gay-marriage issue was roiling Christians? The latter disapprove of gay marriage, so we promote gays hooking up. Never mind the powerful stance our own traditional religion in fact takes against homosexual intercourse — as it does against dehydrating people to death, aborting them, or granting life to murderers. No wonder Christian and Jewish conservatives become impatient with Jewish liberals. Yet, the latter deserve not condemnation but compassion. One of the penitential prayers associated with Purim laments how the Jews of Esther's time once partied in the palace of their foe, King Ahashuerus, enjoying "the feast of the one who abhorred them." America's Christians certainly don't abhor Jews — affection mixed with puzzlement are the themes of their feelings — but there is certainly a tension between our two faiths. They regard us as critically wrong on a vital point, namely in our attitude toward Jesus, and vice versa. For this reason, to rejoice without reservation at their feast must leave a Jew a little uneasy, which is one reason I wrote my book, detailing in a positive way the Jewish position about their savior. However, to deny our own religion — by failing to protest the killing of Terri Schiavo, for example — to save the honor of that very same religion seems the height of incoherence."

"One morning in 1991, two nice young men skipped into the office of Israel Discount Bank manager Gideon Lahav bearing a small suitcase. We came to make a deposit, they trilled, $85 million. Lahav started, but the young men sought to assuage his fears by presenting a document from the Polish central bank attesting that the money was kosher.But at the bank they wondered, and asked the Bank of Israel's Supervisor of Banks what he thought they should do with the money. Regardless of what he said, what's certain is that Discount took the money, deposited it, and within a few months, Andrei Gushiurovsky and Bogoslav Bagshik, who later became known as the "Polacks", bought half of Paz. Later it transpired that the "Polacks" had not inherited the money from a rich uncle, or earned it selling bibles door-to-door or from a lemonade stand. They had embezzled it from a Polish bank ... Why are we so popular? The Israeli bank books reveal that they have no less than $25 billion in foreign deposits. Why do foreigners like Israeli banks so much? Some because they are Jewish, but in most cases, it's because the lion's share of the money comes from tax dodges at best, and crime at worst. Over the years, Israel's banks set up massive branches and operations in South America, Europe and the U.S., which amassed money from exactly such dubious sources. A lot arrived in unmarked suitcases, and usually the banks made little effort to elucidate its provenance. As the 1990s began, Israel's big banks discovered a new geographical entity growing far faster than South America, Europe or the U.S. - Russia. Every few months, some new Russian celebrity, all Jewish of course, would visit Israel, bringing tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. The banks didn't pester the dignitaries with questions, they just opened special divisions for eastern Europe. Picking on Russians Yesterday, Knesset member Yuri Stern attacked the police, claiming the only reason it was picking on the customers of Hapoalim's Hayarkon branch was that they are Russian. The truth is, he has a point. The police and the bankers are highly suspicious of "Russian" money. Yet one can understand their itchiness. Forbes counted no less than 10 Russians in its latest list of the world's richest people, from Mikhail Khodorovsky of Yukos fame with $15 billion, to Roman Abramovich with $10.6 billion, to Mikhail Fridman, Vladimir Potanin, Mikhail Orokhorov, Vladimir Lisin [Jewish?] , Alexei Mordashov [Jewish?], Oleg Deripaska [Jewish?], Viktor Vekselberg, and Vagit Alekperov [Jewish?], the poor man on the list with a mere $2.7 billion. Where were these people 10 years ago? Some were in their 20s, some were penniless entrepreneurs, and most were small businessmen. How did they become enormously wealthy, in global terms, in a vast country whose GDP is 5 percent of America's? Good question. The truth is that most of their assets derived from corrupt politicians. Legitimate millionaires Israel's parallel to Forbes, TheMarker list of the 500 richest people in Israel, has been published for three years now. It also sports some surprising names, such as Arkady Gaidamak, whose wealth is estimated at $800 million; or the trio of Vladimir Dubov, Mikhail Brudno and Leonid Nevzlin, each of whom is worth billions. The Russians on the list don't actually like the publicity. The editor of the Russian version of Forbes was murdered a few months after running the list of Russia's wealthy. Attorney Zvi Hefetz is Israel's ambassador to London. Until recently, he was the representative in Israel of Vladimir Gusinsky, another Russian multi-millionaire who made most of his money in the 1990s. Four years ago, we met with Hefetz after the Wall Street Journal published unflattering assessments of his Russian patron. Hefetz was boiling mad. He claimed Gusinsky had made his fortune legitimately, through banking and media businesses in Russia. During the conversation, he shot out, "You think that all the rich families in Israel, the ones starring on the business pages, made their money legitimately? Did you check how they made their money in the `50s, `60s, `70s and `80s?" Like Stern, Hefetz has a point. The difference between most of the Russians who deposited money at Bank Hapoalim's branch on Hayarkon Street and our "legitimate" millionaires is mainly one of the times. The best way to launder money is to let it age. Wait a few decades. Time is the best bleacher of all. The robber barons of the 20th century are America's most distinguished families today. Israelis who smuggled, stole and bribed politicians for franchises and the like have become the respectable monied classes of this millennium. Until the enactment of the money-laundering law, all a crook had to do was wait enough time for his coal-black filthy lucre to turn white as snow. Now, with the law in place, that's become harder to do."

How did Jewish settlements begin? It's a secret,

"A vehement disagreement, which will be settled only in the High Court of Justice, has been going on for a year and a half now between Jerusalem journalist and researcher Gershom Gorenberg and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) on the one hand, and the Israel Defense Forces Archive and the supervisors of its activity at the Defense Ministry on the other. The affair began in September 2003, when Gorenberg applied to the archive with a request to view material that would help him write a new book. Despite its name, the IDF Archive is not a military institution but rather a civil institution that operates through the Defense Ministry and constitutes part of the Israel State Archives. In addition to IDF documents, the archive also contains civilian documents that have their source at the Bureau of the Minister of Defense. The State Archives are supposed to extend services to every researcher granted the status of "authorized researcher." Gorenberg's request to receive this status was rejected ... When he applied to the IDF Archive he heard from its director, Michal Tsur, that he first had to submit an application for the status of authorized researcher. For the committee that discusses such applications to be able to discuss his request, she explained to him, he had to submit a list of the subjects he wished to research. As the catalogs at the archive are confidential, he would have to submit a list of subjects, the members of the committee would review it and find the documents connected to the subjects, and if they could be revealed, his request would be approved. "Her whole explanation sounded a little strange to me," recalled Gorenberg last week. "Until then I'd never encountered an archive where the researcher was not allowed to see the catalogs." The list of subjects that Gorenberg prepared for the committee included the following items: minutes of conversations that defense minister Moshe Dayan conducted with Rabbi Moshe Levinger and Hanan Porat in connection with the establishment of the first Jewish settlements in Hebron and Gush Etzion; documents having to do with discussions in Dayan's bureau about allowing Levinger and his friends to remain at the Park Hotel in Hebron after the famous Passover seder eve in 1968; documents having to do with defense minister Shimon Peres' contacts with the heads of Gush Emunim in the Sebastia affair; correspondence between defense minister Dayan and prime minister Golda Meir and minister Yisrael Galili about the formulation of the Alignment election platform in 1973 and the formulation of the "Galili document" (two documents that dealt with the establishment of the city of Yamit in Sinai and Jewish settlement in the Rafah Salient); the report of the military investigation committee that examined the expulsion of Bedouin from the Rafah Salient in 1972 (and the part played by GOC Southern Command Ariel Sharon in the affair); documents in which the judge advocate general Meir Shamgar analyzed the legality of the establishment of the first Jewish settlements in the territories; "legal material on permission for Israeli citizens to stay in the territories" and on "the seizure of lands for purposes of settlement" and "the decisions by the military prosecution in the mater of Jewish settlers who stayed illegally in the territories during the period of the Gush Emunim settlement attempts." After three months went by without any answer, Gorenberg phoned Tsur and heard from her that his application had been rejected. "It's a matter," she explained, "of material that is too sensitive, especially in today's circumstances."

Bogus lawyer jailed 12 years,

"A convicted felon who posed as a lawyer and represented hundreds of clients has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.  Harold David Goldstein told the federal judge on Wednesday that he made sincere efforts to represent his clients despite his lack of a law licence. Goldstein, 59, said he won 25 cases in the eight months that he operated a law practice. “I lied about being a lawyer but other than the lie, everything else was totally legitimate,” he said.  Goldstein represented hundreds of clients, including many immigrants at deportation hearings, said Assistant US Attorney Andrew Stolper. “It's a disaster,” he said.  The authorities are reviewing cases handled by Goldstein but nothing can be done for the immigrants who were deported, Stolper said. A jury convicted Goldstein of perjury in 2003 and he pleaded guilty to fraud.  He was arrested after a former partner in his law firm discovered the deception and contacted the authorities.  Goldstein has convictions dating to the 1970s when he was found guilty of defrauding 13,000 investors in a commodities scheme and selling US$1mil (RM3.8mil) in phoney gold contracts."

"The Senate Finance Committee is investigating the activities of a tax-exempt foundation controlled by a lobbyist and his wife. Three years after its casino was shut down by Texas authorities, the Tigua Indian tribe of El Paso is at the center of a widening scandal that reaches into the top levels of Congress. The Senate Finance Committee is investigating the activities of a tax-exempt foundation controlled by Jack Abramoff, a powerful Washington lobbyist and former movie producer who represented the tribe, and his wife. Abramoff and Michael Scanlon, a former press secretary to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, were working in 2002 to get Congress to pass legislation that would have allowed the Tiguas' Speaking Rock Casino to reopen. Last year, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee uncovered e-mails detailing how Abramoff funneled money through his foundation to pay for activities that congressional rules prohibit lobbyists from paying for directly. Now the Senate finance panel is questioning whether the foundation is legitimately tax-exempt. In a letter dated March 16, the finance committee chairman, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, asked Abramoff's Capital Athletic Foundation to explain why it solicited contributions from Indian tribal governments and "why should they not be deemed payments for attempts to influence Federal and state laws and regulations regarding gaming." Among the documents being sought by the panel are travel records about a 2002 golfing trip to Scotland by Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio. Ney was a key player in Abramoff's effort to reopen the Tiguas' casino by attaching a provision to an election overhaul bill authored by Ney, who is chairman of the House Administration Committee ... Abramoff's dealings have already brought DeLay under scrutiny for his ties to the lobbyist and his extensive GOP fund-raising network. DeLay is being questioned about a similar golfing trip he made to Scotland in 2000 organized by Abramoff. The center says it sponsored that trip, as DeLay reported in disclosure forms, but recent reports indicate that the 2000 trip was paid for with funds from another tribe represented by Abramoff and a gaming company. Abramoff, who produced the 1989 Dolph Lundgren movie "Red Scorpion," began working behind the scenes for the Tiguas in 2002 with Scanlon, who was contracted by the tribe for a $4.2 million fee intended to generate support in Congress for reopening the casino. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the new chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, is pressing forward with investigations of Abramoff and Scanlon and the $66 million that the panel believes the lobbyists bilked out of six tribes they represented. McCain said, "We're not investigating any member of Congress. ... We are investigating the fraud that was perpetrated on those tribes." He said his committee will hold hearings on all six tribes known to have contracted with Abramoff and Scanlon. "After we finish all six hearings, then we'll decide what needs to be done to protect Indian tribes from that kind of outrageous rip-off," said McCain. "That's our job."

"A Northridge man was sentenced today to 240 months in federal prison for running a commodities futures trading firm that defrauded hundreds of investors out of more than $95 million through fraudulent foreign currency trades. Moshe Leichner, 56, was sentenced this morning by United States District Judge John F. Walter. In addition to the prison term - the maximum sentence available under the three counts he pleaded guilty to - Judge Walter ordered Moshe Leichner to pay $94,796,530 in restitution to 296 victims. Moshe Leichner's son, Zvi Leichner, 33, of Bell Canyon, is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Walter on April 4. Zvi Leichner also faces up to 20 years in prison. The Leichners, who have been held without bond for the past two years, each pleaded guilty in July 2003 to two counts of wire fraud and one count of money laundering. The Leichners' foreign exchange currency trading operation was called Midland Euro and was located in Sherman Oaks. According to court documents, between July 1998 and February 2003, the Leichners obtained more than $130 million from investors located in the United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Israel for investments in foreign currency. The Leichners often solicited their investors through the Internet and through online bulletin boards."

"Thousands of foreign women have been smuggled into Israel and sold into prostitution, earning the criminal underworld millions of dollars a year, a parliamentary investigation has found. For the last four years, between 3,000 and 5,000 women have been sold as sex slaves for 8,000 to 10,000 dollars and forced to work up to 18 hours a day, said the head of the inquiry, Zehava Gal-On, of the left-wing opposition Yahad party. On average the women receive four dollars for every 120 dollars that clients pay their pimps for their services. "We began this inquiry to investigate the extent of this phenomenon and raise political awareness of their plight and the brutal nature of the trafficking of women in this time of globalisation," said Gal-On. "People must understand that sexual slavery is going on under our noses and must be obliterated," she said, praising tough laws against people trafficking and prostitution already in place. Cotler tries to deflect the praise as Canada moves against racism,

"Since he was appointed justice minister and attorney general in December 2003, human rights lawyer Irwin Cotler has shown he’s not afraid to tackle challenging or controversial issues. Cotler, who had been a parliamentarian from Montreal, has fought to make legalization of same-sex civil marriage one of the key legislative goals of the Liberal government, as well as the decriminalization of possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. Now the lifelong crusader against anti-Semitism has helped make the fight against racism another priority for Prime Minister Paul Martin’s government. The rise in hate crimes and racism in Canada and around the world — including incidents such as the April 2004 firebombing of a Jewish school in Montreal — demonstrates the need for the government to take concrete action, Cotler said. Martin’s government recently unveiled Canada’s first-ever National Action Plan Against Racism, which would earmark some U.S. $45 million to combat racism and racial hatred over a five-year period. Cotler, who sat down with JTA last week to discuss the plan, said its announcement in early March was no coincidence, coming shortly after the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in late January. After a series of attacks on Jewish institutions and personal property in Toronto and Montreal last spring, Cotler was asked in Parliament how the government intended to respond. “I said that we regarded these as an assault on the inherent dignity and worth of every human being, an assault on the equal dignity and worth of all human beings, on assault on the rights of minorities to protection against groups vilifying hate, an assault on our undertakings with respect to protecting against racism and hatred in international treaties,” he said. “I concluded by saying that we would not be silent, we will not be intimidated, we will speak out, we will act and we will consign racism to the dustbin of history where it belongs.” In October 2004, the government pledged to strengthen Canada’s ability to combat racism, hate speech and hate crimes. The result is the new action plan, which has as its slogan “A Canada for All.” The plan sets out a 10-step series of measures designed to deal with racism and hatred, both inside Canada and internationally, including on the Internet. An important first step is moral and political leadership “as an antidote against the consequences of indifference or inaction,” Cotler said. “The second thing is working with civil society to develop a common front against racism, a constituency of consciousness against racism.” Public education is another major component of the plan, especially focusing on youth ... The Justice Department doesn’t yet have a branch or a person dedicated to researching or monitoring racial hatred on the Internet, Cotler said, but he has made that a priority. “We need a government agency or department that would be responsible for Internet hate,” he said. The struggle is an international one, he stressed, “because no country alone can combat what is in effect a faceless, borderless, predatory racist hate that requires the mobilization of international resources against hate.” Canada will sign an optional protocol to the Convention on Cybercrime that will enhance the country’s ability to fight hate on the Internet, both domestically and internationally, he said. Cotler also is working with justice ministers around the world to take on racial hatred. Recently, for example, Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel, who had exhausted his legal appeals in Canada, was deported to his native Germany, where he was put in jail. The arrangements around the deportation gave Cotler the opportunity to discuss bilateral approaches for combating racism, hate speech and hate crimes with his German colleagues. “We agreed to exchange our respective views in order to learn from each other and enhance mutual legal cooperation in this regard,” he said. Cotler deflected praise from himself, saying that a comprehensive legal program against racism already was in place before he took office, and that the government merely had made fighting racism more of a priority. Yet some might conclude that it took a committed Jewish human rights lawyer and lifelong enemy of anti-Semitism and racism to get Canada to take such issues more seriously."

AIPAC staffers go to grand jury; resolution not seen as imminent,

"Top officials at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee have appeared before a grand jury and two senior staffers have been placed on paid leave in the latest developments in the federal investigation of the pro-Israel lobby for allegedly passing classified information to Israel, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the case. At the same time, the Pentagon staffer at the center of the allegations, accused of espionage by the FBI and then pressured into an alleged FBI “sting” against AIPAC, has been quietly rehired by the Pentagon, over the FBI’s objections. Sources close to the investigation, while confirming these details, say they do not foresee an imminent resolution before AIPAC’s annual policy conference, which begins May 22. Rumors that something might happen sooner have been swirling around Washington in recent weeks. The investigation came to light last August with an FBI raid of AIPAC’s Washington headquarters. Files belonging to two senior staffers, policy director Steve Rosen and Iran specialist Keith Weissman, were confiscated. News of the raid was leaked to CBS News as it was happening, igniting worldwide media coverage and speculation about a “nest of Pollardites,” a reference to the American Jewish naval analyst who was convicted of spying for Israel in 1986 ... The FBI launched another raid on AIPAC headquarters in December 2004. It also issued grand jury subpoenas to four top staffers: Howard Kohr, the group’s executive director; Richard Fishman, the managing director; Renee Rothstein, the communications director; and Raphael Danziger, the research director. In late January or early February, sources say, at least several of the four testified before the grand jury. AIPAC would not comment on the proceedings of the grand jury, which was convened by U.S. Attorney Paul McNulty, the federal prosecutor in eastern Virginia ... Franklin, who had been threatened with an espionage indictment by FBI assistant director David Szady’s counterintelligence division, was pressured into acting as an FBI informant against AIPAC, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the FBI’s tactics against Franklin. In an earlier case involving a CIA staff attorney, Szady had been publicly accused of targeting Jews with security investigations ... Szady told a contact that Franklin’s rehiring by the Pentagon was not “our call,” and was done over the FBI’s strenuous objections. An FBI spokesman refused to comment on the rehiring ... Senior FBI officials, stung by criticism of Szady, are trying to understand exactly what conduct the agency is investigating. Two FBI agents recently talked to a senior Jewish communal leader, not to extract potential evidence but “simply to understand how AIPAC works,” according to one participant. The leader explained how the American Jewish community relates to its ancestral homeland. The conversation was characterized by the participant as “extremely congenial.” The investigation grew out of a sting last summer by Szady’s counterintelligence division after Franklin, the Pentagon analyst, was observed at a Virginia restaurant in June 2003 sharing a classified Iran policy draft with an AIPAC staffer, according to multiple sources aware of the prosecution’s case ... Under FBI pressure, Franklin agreed to feed AIPAC’s Rosen and Weissman bogus information about plans to kidnap Israelis in Kurdistan, the sources say. AIPAC officials reportedly passed that information to the Israeli Embassy in an attempt to save lives, sources say ... "About 5,000 people have petitioned the Russian government to ban Jewish organizations because they claim a basic Judaic book professes religious hatred. The signatories, who included former world chess champion Boris Spassky, claimed that Kizur Shulkhan Arukh, an abbreviated version of a 16th-century book of daily rules for Jews, teaches hatred toward non-Jews, The Moscow Times reported Monday. The Sova Center for Information and Analysis said the letter was sent to the Prosecutor General's office March 21, but the newspaper did not report that the petition had been received. One of Russia's two main rabbis, Adolf Shayevich, condemned the letter as a way for a number of ambitious politicians to earn cheap popularity. Boruch Gorin, a spokesman for the Russian Federation of Jewish Communities, called for an investigation into manifestations of anti-Semitism, the Russian news agency Interfax reported. People who have achieved success in life and have certain authority in society must understand that they cover their names with indelible shame by signing such documents, Gorin said, in an apparent reference to Spassky. The letter came two months after 20 members of the lower house of Parliament sent a similar letter to the Prosecutor General's office."

Investment company Rosebud Medical controlled by David Weissman and Shraga Biran, has announced that it has signed an agreement in principle to buy a property with 90,000-sq.m. of gross space in Cologne, Germany, for €48 million (including expenses and transfer taxes). The property is currently owned by a Swiss company that controls a group of technology companies and that has over SF 1 billion in shareholders' equity and annual sales. Rosebud plans to buy the property through a foreign subsidiary in which it owns 70%, with the rest held by foreign partners.Rosebud reports that the purchased property is located in the heart of a residential neighborhood in central Cologne."

"The Jewish-led and financed Zionist movement and its influential and wealthy supporters and leaders are a highly cohesive and disciplined group which exhibits zero tolerance against any Jewish dissidents or other critics of the warrior state or of their supporters anywhere in the world. What accounts for the apparent anomaly of highly educated professors, doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, media moguls and billionaire real estate tycoons giving unconditional support to a state engaged in primitive vindictive acts, of mass torture of prisoners, of collective punishment and guilt (destroying family homes of guerrilla suspects, taking family members hostage), systematically destroying farmland and uprooting hundreds of thousands of farmers, communities for almost six decades? They embrace ancient land claims and the vindictive and gratuitous humiliation of subjugated people based on mythological religious beliefs. For the Presidents of the Major Jewish Organizations and their functionaries there are Five Commandments: (1) ‘thou shalt not criticize any action by any Israeli leader at any time, no matter how heinous the crime, nor how often it is repeated, irregardless of how vast or intense world opprobrium’, (2) ‘Thou shall not allow any others to criticize or act contrary to Jewish State interests or to organizations which embrace the Zionist ideal,’ (3)‘Every weapon, financial, physical, psychological, ideological and economic can be legitimately wielded to weaken, isolate, discredit or stigmatize critics of the Tribal Homeland or any of the overseas Tribal Organizations,’ (4)‘Thou shall raise funds from all sources (legal or illegal), public, social or private to finance the military machine of the Tribal leaders – tribute secured from lesser “others” must enhance the security and living standards of the chosen people’ and (5)‘Thou shall declare loyalty first and foremost to the tribal identity, then to the powers which support “our tribe” and lastly to “universal values”’. Despite sharp criticism from a minority of dissident Jews, both in Israel, the US and elsewhere, there are certain unstated codes which are observed even by the most critical commentators. One is to never criticize or identify the power of the Jewish organizations in the US and their influence in the government. Jewish progressives de facto denial of Jewish power in shaping US war policy in the Middle East severely restricts the effectiveness of the anti-war movement by exonerating one of the key ideological props of the imperial war machine. The second unstated code followed by the “observant” progressive Jewish intellectuals is a denial that Israel has an important influence on US Middle East and global policy via its tribal loyalists in the US. Jewish progressives deliberately and systematically exclude any mention of Jewish power and influence in shaping US policy in the Middle East by focusing exclusively on “oil interests” or “neo-conservative ideologues” (who just coincidently are mostly tribespeople and their camp-followers). In deference to or more precisely because they share a deep underlying identity with the tribe – they refuse to include any systematic study of the very obvious and blatant exercise of power in every branch of government, electoral processes and media reports. Likewise with the Middle East, Israel is considered by progressive Jews as an “instrument” of US imperialism even as the instrument cuts both ways – as Israel uses the US to savage its adversaries, to build up its military machine and to manufacture its commercial weapons systems to sell even to US competitors (i.e. China). The emergence of atavistic behavior and its extension among the Zionist elite is a relatively recent development (over the past two decades) and goes contrary to the universalistic, secular and socialist values and practices as well as the traditional religious and communal practices and beliefs of many Jewish communities during previous centuries. The embrace of imperial power, the turn from religious communitarian values toward the embrace of the militaristic state of Israel, the shift from internationalism and socialism toward an unconditional embrace of a narrow exclusivist ideology has activated the latent atavistic behavior associated with vengeful killing of adversaries and blind singular loyalty to the idea of Israeli supremacy in the Middle East. Translated into the US context, it means virulent pro-war propaganda, advocacy of concentration camps for Islamic believers (as proposed by Daniel Pipes and others) and collaboration with Mossad agents in promoting Israel’s strategic military, economic and political goals; by utilizing all the instruments of power within the US and with its overseas clients (Kurdish regions of Iraq, for example). Atavistic behavior secures its goals through the shrewd manipulation and artificial inflation of “fears” emanating from Israel’s enemies. The purpose is to create mass support in the US for wars on Israel’s behalf. US Zionist ideologues, drawing heavily on the self-induced political isolation which the Israeli State has brought upon itself through its savage destruction of Arab Palestine, have elaborated and preached a paranoid view of the world, in which all international organizations (the UN, the World Court etc.) and forums, international opinions surveys, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa are accused of “anti-Semitism” because they recognize and condemn Israel’s violation of Palestinian political and human rights."

"This is one of those handwringing articles (by a Miriam Gross in the Spectator - registration required) about how hard it is to be Jewish these days. See how she starts:
'The fact that I am Jewish has always mystified me. It bears no relation to anything else in my life — not to the way I was brought up, not to religion since I am agnostic, nor to any community in which I have lived ... I learnt nothing about Judaism or about Jewish traditions and culture at school, any more than I did from my parents. I never once took part in a Jewish festival nor did I ever go into a synagogue. So it is not surprising that, for most of my life, I have had almost no sense of Jewish identity. I feel much more English than Jewish. This must be true of hundreds of Jews with similar backgrounds.'
She then discusses Jews with regard to each other:
'Jews are as different from one another as non-Jews.... What, for example, do Einstein and Lauren Bacall have in common? Or Kafka and Michael Howard, or Primo Levi and Philip Green, or the Chief Rabbi and Ruby Wax? Or, for that matter, an Algerian Jewish farmer and a New York psychoanalyst? Nothing. Or rather, only one thing: Hitler would transport them all to a concentration camp.'
Now I could really warm to this theme. And it gets better:
'The question of whether there is such a thing as a Jewish race has been endlessly debated, but race has always seemed to me a meaningless concept when applied to people whose physical appearances range from the swarthily Semitic to the blondly Danish and whose moral, social and intellectual characteristics cover the whole gamut of human behaviour.'
But then it starts to deteriorate:
'just as my parents were forced by the Nazis to focus on their Jewishness, so the recent resurgence of anti-Semitism in many parts of the world has made me much more conscious of being a Jew. Not that I have ever personally encountered anti-Semitism. But even in England — which, whatever anyone might say to the contrary, is not a racist country — there is more of it in the air; the anti-Semitism of the past...is coming back into the open.'
Now it starts to actually degenerate:
'I now sometimes find myself telling new acquaintances that I am Jewish for no other reason than to prevent the possibility of their letting drop some anti-Semitic remark. It would be less easy to do this when talking to Muslims who have been taught that Jews are devils, responsible for all the ills of the world including 9/11; or who have perhaps read and believed the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, that horrible forgery which is now a bestseller throughout the Arab world.'
So, she has never experienced anti-semitism, not from Muslims or non-Muslims. She has read the "reports" though, but in spite of her never having experienced it she tells people that she is Jewish so that they won't say anything offensive to her. She has never met any Muslims apparently because she would find it harder to tell them that she is Jewish in order to stop them from saying anything beastly about Jews, but in spite of that, still she has never experienced anti-semitism. It is therefore, safe to assume she cannot have met any Muslims. If she had she would have heard them say something anti-semitic since she would not have told them that she is Jewish because she "would. have found this less easy" than telling non-Muslims. So now we can welcome her back to the Jewish fold. She has never experienced anti-semitism but she knows there's a lot of it about, after all she reads the Spectator. She has, it seems, never met a Muslim but:
'In this new climate I feel more of a bond with other Jews than I ever have in the past - indeed it is a rather comforting fellow feeling, somewhat akin, perhaps, to belonging to a secret society.'
Now if you're not Jewish, please don't ever say that being Jewish is like belonging to a secret society. You'd be eaten alive and that would be before angry Jews got their hands on you ... What a shame that the main argument in her article is that Jews, who have no positive Jewish attribute, can join in a secret society of Jews because they have read that Muslims, who they have never met, don't like us."

[Every once and a while some moral glint sneaks out of Israel, in this case about the rise of Jewish fascism. But telling the truth in that hellhole is so rare that it is always shocking. If only the virus of morality could spread throughout world Jewish tribalism. Don't hold your breath waiting for this to happen.]

"Early on the morning of Purim 1994, when the Israel Defense Forces were busy making their final preparations for withdrawing from Gaza and Jericho under the Oslo Accords, Baruch Goldstein decided to do something to shuffle the deck and stop the withdrawal: He fired into a crowd of Muslim worshipers in the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, killing 29 Palestinians. In his testimony in court, Yigal Amir said that the idea of killing the prime minister first entered his head when he attended Goldstein's funeral and saw Goldstein's hundreds of admirers. At the time, the government declined to listen to then-attorney general Michael Ben-Yair's recommendation that it immediately evacuate all the settlers from Hebron, thereby demonstrating uncompromising determination. Since then, the extremist camp has grown, and today, its members number in the thousands. It is currently girding up its loins to stop the disengagement - and once again, we are witnessing intensive violent activity whose goal is to fan the flames of hatred between Arabs and Jews. Now, as then, preparations for the disengagement are being accompanied by daily pogroms in Arab communities, destruction of property, harassment of soldiers, physical assaults on Palestinians, cutting down trees, beating and throwing stones at passersby, threatening nighttime patrols through Arab villages and even shooting with intent to kill. When such things happen under the guise of Purim celebrations, they are accompanied by a phrase that recalls the Goldstein affair: "The rioters were drunk." It is inconceivable that no lessons have been learned - that the army and police are once again waiting for a commission of inquiry to describe after the fact what could have been prevented in advance. The job of the IDF, which is responsible for security in the territories, is not to describe the violence and warn against it, but to prevent it. The Purim rampage by Yitzhar residents was not exceptional; it followed seven other incidents that had been extensively reported in the media during the previous week. Had it not been for the presence of human rights activists in the area, it is doubtful that the public would even know about what happened. These activists brought about the arrest of Avri Ran of Itamar; they are also the ones who reported the poisoning of livestock in the South Hebron Hills. The settlers, for their part, attacked the soldiers and policemen who came to arrest them and ultimately succeeded in chasing them off. While the army debates the correct way to treat the settlers, and settler spokesmen exploit feelings of pity to cry about collective delegitimization, the next massacre is brewing almost openly. The principal lesson that should have been learned from Baruch Goldstein - who, like Yigal Amir, was no "wild weed," but rather someone who acted with the support and encouragement of many - is that there is no place for understanding and tolerance on this issue: The rioters belong in jail. This is even truer when it is clear to everyone that the rioters are attempting to ignite a fire as the evacuation of settlements approaches. This is almost the last possible moment for action by IDF officers in the territories, who last week reported feelings of helplessness in their ranks. One can assume that stronger political backing would produce results. But attempts to ingratiate themselves with the right, and statements such as that of Major General Yair Naveh about the need to embrace the settlers, will lead to disaster."

Budget for cancer mapping doesn't extend to Arab sector,

"Four years ago, in June 2001, the Health Ministry published a map of the geographical distribution of malignant diseases in Israel during the years 1984-1999. The detailed report presents more than 68 pages of data about malignant diseases in communities with more than 10,000 residents. However, except for Rahat, the report did not include a single Arab community. For some months now, environmental and social justice groups have been trying to find out why. No answer came until last October when the head of the Health Ministry's cancer registration unit, Dr. Micha Barhana, wrote: "Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to process and publish a mapping of disease in the Arab sector, because of budgetary problems, which prevent contact with the residential registries, and because patients' addresses have not been updated over the past years." Dr. Barhana's reply was met with outrage. "It is inconceivable," says Leithi Ghanem of the Al-Rasd Organization for Environmental Quality, "We identify a worrisome upward trend in malignant diseases in the Arab sector. We want to get to the bottom of the causes and demand that a geographical mapping be published, identical to the previous one, but now with a focus on Arab communities. This publication will shed light on the medical situation of Israel's Arab population and will help focus attention and treatment to prevent further deterioration." Ghanem presents data collected by the Israel Center for Disease Control, which shows that in the past three decades the rate of malignant diseases in the Arab population has risen by 97.8 percent among men, and 123 percent among women, as opposed to a rise of 39.8 percent for men and 24.4 percent for women among the Jewish population ... "When an area with high rates of disease is identified - and the north has many diseased areas associated with environmental pollution - policies can be changed," [Gil Yaakov, of the Coalition for Public Health] says. "Only when a correlation can be shown is it possible to prevent installation of new hazards, or demand tighter standards. In most cases, the polluters argue that no connection between pollution and disease can be proved. Geographical mapping can be very helpful in demonstrating the connection. Mayors will only take action when presented with hard data." ... Director of the Center Against Racism, Bakr Awawda, recently approached Health Minister Dan Naveh, demanding that Arab communities be mapped. "Only mapping Jewish communities violates constitutional rights, anchored in the Basic Law on Human Dignity and Freedom," says the letter, which was sent more than two months ago and is still awaiting a reply. "This is a sensitive issue involving responsibility for human life," Awawda says. "I live in Kafr Kana. We sense that there are many more cancer patients over the past years. Perhaps there is a connection with emissions from the nearby industrial zone, perhaps it is the water sources. Who knows? A mapping could begin to point to answers to these disturbing questions. Why is [Jewish] Upper Nazareth in the report, but neighboring [Arab] Kafr Kana and Nazareth are not?" ... "The report has produced two different groups," says attorney Khaider Ala from the Center Against Racism. "One, an overprivileged group, whose lives are dear to the state and to the Health Ministry; a second, whose lives are of no importance to the state. The state must implement an economic and social policy that will ensure the health of all its citizens."

"Israel had formally opened the world’s largest “Museum of Tolerance” in Jerusalem on March 15^th to commemorate Jewish victims of Nazi massacres during WWII. Hundreds of guest and international dignitaries attended the ceremony. The museum was erected on a piece of property west of Jerusalem known to Palestinians as “Mamella” and to Israelis as Mount Herzl. Mamella, an Islamic property, contains an Islamic grave yard known as “Ma’man Allah”. Contradicting the spirit of tolerance Israel had illegally usurped the property to erect its museum. Two months ago the global political community gathered in Poland to mark the 60^th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. The opening of Jerusalem Museum of Tolerance came as another attempt to politically and financially blackmail the world by burdening its conscious with the exaggerated facts of the Jewish Holocaust. Sharon, the Israeli Prime Minister, reminded his guests with this guilt when he claimed that Jerusalem is the only place on earth where Jews feel they are home, they are free, and have the right to defend themselves. Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres declared Israel a holy place and the biggest hope for the future. The Israeli President Moshe Katzav added to that guilt when he reminded his guests of the wave of anti-Semitism the Jews had to face in Europe. He stated that although the conviction that anti-Semitism was an ancient phenomenon belonging to old Europe, the world, once again, is facing a new wave of anti-Semitism not seen since WWII, yet Europe now is a new another Europe. He offered praise to European leaders who reacted against this hatred and who denounced attacks against Israel.  The opening is considered the largest international event in Israel since the funeral of the previous Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated by a religious fanatic Israeli. Among the attending international dignitaries were the presidents of Poland and Switzerland, the premiers of Belgium, Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Romania and Sweden, and the Spanish foreign ministers. Also attended the British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, Russian security council chief Igor Ivanov, Vatican representative Cardinal Jean Tauran, and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Annan said that the United Nations, like Israel, rose up from the ashes of the Holocaust which led to the death of million of Jews and was the driving force behind the universal declaration of human rights. He claimed that this Museum remind us of those who perish, and gives us the determination to ensure that such horror never happens again anywhere. Annan’s hypocrisy, along with those of attending leaders, to the idea of tolerance and preventing any future holocaust, became apparent side by side to their adulation to the Israeli government when none of them had criticized Israeli massacres of Palestinians. None of them visited the neighboring Palestinian refugee camps, nor the Israeli jailing wall erected on usurped Palestinian land to incarcerate the whole Palestinian society. This large all-encompassing prison is far worse than the Nazi Auschwitz death camp, and far worse than the Fascist large jail built in Libyan desert to isolate whole people within barbed wires. Those dignitaries had ignored the countless Israeli massacres of Palestinians that started three thousand years ago – the Old Testament tells us of those massacres – up to date ending with massacres of Jenin, of Nablus, of Hebron, of Gaza, of Rafah and of many other Palestinian cities and villages. They ignored the daily civilian murders, the illegal demolition of Palestinian homes, and the razing of fertile land. Claiming themselves to be the defenders of human rights they have ignored the seven thousand Palestinian prisoners – including women and children – rotting in Israeli jails and suffering from inhumane and immoral abuse and torture. None of them uttered one word criticizing the gradual annihilating policies Israel is exercising against Arabs including their history, their culture, their land, their trees, their livestock, their homes, and even their graves. The adulation of the global political community to Israel becomes prominent when the UN sentenced some European countries, such as Germany and Switzerland, to pay monetary preparations to Israel for the perished Jewish lives and for their damaged properties, but does not sentence any other country to pay preparations for the victims of their own massacres. There is no preparations for the American Indian Natives whose hundreds of millions were annihilated by the US, no preparations for the African Blacks who were kidnapped from Africa and enslaved for generations by American, no preparations for the hundreds of thousands of German soldiers who surrendered to the Allied Forces at the end of WWII, and were imprisoned in naked British and American prisons exposed to the harsh European weather leading to their death due to cold, sickness and starvation. There are no preparations for the Arabs, whose countries were occupied by British, French, and Italian troops destroying the cities, killing civilians, imprisoning and torturing thousands of innocent people. What about the African massacres in Rwanda, in Uganda, in Somalia and in Sudan? Are there any preparations for them? Will the UN fulfill its promises of ensuring such horrors will never happen to them, or such a protection is promised only to the Israelis?  It is becoming a very well known fact that Israel does not practice tolerance at all when it comes to any other people on this planet, and especially when it comes to Arabs. Israel’s history is filled with perpetual wars against its neighbors since it was forcefully implanted in the heart of the Arab World. Israel had refused – and still refuses – to accept any peace agreement offered by the Arabs, the last was offered few days ago by the Arab League. These facts seemed to escape (or be ignored by) the many dignitaries, who gathered to attend the dedication of the Museum. The real meaning of the term tolerance is “grudgingly putting up with something and not totally accepting it”. It does not carry the intended meanings of forgiveness, mutual co-existence, and religious acceptance. Such noble ideas contradict the existence of Israeli Zionist state built on racial prejudice ideologies of “God’s chosen people” and keeping Israel a “Jewish State”.  It becomes extremely ironic to stick the term “tolerance” to a building that is so intolerant to the facts of its environment, and especially to its existence on top of an Islamic grave yard. The grave yard was used to bury Jerusalemite victims of foreign invaders. Jerusalemites were invaded by the Assyrians in 710BC, by the Persians in 614, liberated by Moslems in 636 to be massacred – 70 thousands of them - by the Crusades in 1099, liberated again by Saladin in 1187, ruled by Ottomans until 1947 when British took over, and finally invaded by Israel in 1948. The grave yard was used until 1927 when it became fully populated. In May of 2004 Israeli bulldozers razed it to make room for the Museum of Tolerance. The Israeli annihilation campaign is not directed only against live Palestinians but also against their dead. Israel had destroyed many Palestinian – especially Islamic - grave yards. This is an intentional policy stemming not from development needs or for public welfare, but from a policy of ethnic cleansing. The existence of ancient grave yards confirms Palestinian history and their right to the land. This Museum of Tolerance - intended to symbolize the Jewish Holocaust and to illicit sympathy for Israel - stands as a symbol of the Zionist racial discrimination and the Israeli terrorist occupation of Palestine, being resembled by other nations to Nazi and Fascist terror. This museum is a shame to every Zionist Israeli Jew."

Soros fails to defeat conviction for insider trading,

"GEORGE SOROS, the billionaire investor, yesterday failed in his appeal in Paris against an insider trading conviction that he fears will destroy his reputation. The Paris Appeal Court upheld a €2.2 million fine for using privileged information during a botched corporate raid on the Société Générale bank in 1988. The fine is equivalent to the profits Mr Soros, 74, made from the transaction. The Hungarian-born financier was not in court to hear the ruling, but Maître Jean-Michel Darois, his lawyer, said he would appeal to France’s highest tribunal, la Cour de Cassation. “After a bad inquiry that has taken such as long time, we could only expect a bad decision,” he said. At the hearing last month, Mr Soros, who helped to break the pound with his speculative attacks on it in 1992, pleaded with the appeal court judges to quash his conviction. He said: “My reputation is at stake. I have many enemies all over the world, not only in America but in the former Soviet Union and in parts of Asia. The conviction by the lower court was a gift to my enemies and they have already used it.” However, the court found him guilty of exploiting “precise, confidential information that was liable to affect the price” of Société Générale shares."

"Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin was reinstated a few weeks ago,
after sitting at home for half a year and being barred from returning to his job on the Iranian desk in the Department of Defense's policy division. Franklin was at the center of a lengthy FBI investigation after suspicions arose that he transferred classified information about U.S. policy on Iran to members of the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). In the seven months since the affair made headlines on the CBS evening news, the investigation has been kept under tight wraps, but its ramifications are already being felt. While Franklin is back at work, and, say well-placed sources, is expected to reach a plea bargain, the spotlight has moved to the AIPAC officials - two senior members were suspended for the duration of the case and four other senior officials were forced to testify at length before the special investigative jury in Virginia (whose proceedings are classified) appointed for the case. Even if the investigation is nowhere near completion, it has definitely reached a crossroads, at which investigators must decide on the suspects in the case - Larry Franklin alone; Franklin and two AIPAC officials, Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman; or whether, on top of those three, the entire AIPAC organization has acted unlawfully. Sources close to the investigation suggested recently that it would end in a plea bargain. Franklin would plead to a lesser crime of unauthorized transfer of information, Rosen and Weissman would be charged with receiving classified information unlawfully, and AIPAC would remain unstained. Franklin's lawyer, Plato Cacheris, Thursday denied the reports, stating: "We have not entered any plea of defense with the Justice Department." AIPAC refused to say anything about the possibility of a plea bargain ... From AIPAC's standpoint, the issue at hand is containment: can the affair be limited to Rosen and Weissman, or is the investigation directed at the lobby as a whole? It is clear that the FBI has as its objective an extensive investigation against AIPAC. Investigators have been looking into AIPAC's entire manner of operating, not just in the Franklin instance. An official questioned twice by the FBI, as a witness, was astounded by investigators' intimate familiarity with AIPAC. "They know everything there. They asked very precise questions regarding the organization's operations," he said. The intended breadth of the investigation is also evident from the FBI's dramatic moves - raiding AIPAC offices in December and issuing subpoenas to its four top executives. Executive Director Howard Kohr, Managing Director Richard Fishman, Research Director Rafael Danziger and Communications Director Renee Rothstein appeared before the investigative jury and were questioned at length. Investigators also reportedly tried to use Franklin, after the affair erupted, to incriminate as many senior AIPAC officials as possible. The Jerusalem Post reported four months ago that investigators informed Franklin of the suspicions against him and asked for his cooperation. In a sting operation, he received information from the FBI agents that Iran was planning to attack Israelis operating in the Kurdish region in Iraq. Franklin, at the FBI's instructions, telephoned AIPAC's Rosen and Weissman
and gave them the information, and they rushed to pass it on to Israeli diplomats, thereby falling into the FBI trap."

"Israeli tycoons are in hot pursuit of diamond riches in Angola, one of Africa's most impoverished, corrupt and war-torn countries. Will Lev Leviev, with a `Russian connection' to the Angolan president, be displaced by his ambitious young Haredi rival, Dan Gertler? Did Dan replace Lev as Isabel's favorite? Is there a struggle between Dan and Lev? Did Arcadi and Lev have a falling out? Is Isabel trying to push Arcadi out? What is the role of Maurice Tempelsman? And what will Benny do? The answers to these questions - which sound like part of a promo for the next episode of a soap opera - might go some way toward explaining the tangled relations between Israeli and foreign tycoons in Angola. At stake is trade in diamonds, revenues of hundreds of millions of dollars and international intrigue across four continents. Honor, prestige, self-image, ego and roiling passions are the driving forces. These are the protagonists of the drama now under way between Luanda, New York and Tel Aviv: The central figures are Dan Gertler, an ambitious young diamond merchant, who wants to obtain a slice of the Angolan diamond market; Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of the president of Angola and a sharp, highly influential businesswoman in her country; Lev Leviev, one of the world's biggest diamond tycoons, who until recently was considered the "diamond emperor" of Angola; and Arcadi Gaydamak, a Russian-Israeli-French businessman who also holds an Angolan diplomatic passport and is considered one of the foreign investors with the greatest influence on President Jose Eduardo dos Santos; Benny Steinmetz, an Israeli diamond merchant and businessman who was thrown out of the Angolan diamond market four years ago; and Maurice Tempelsman, a Jewish-American diamond merchant, who was also thrown out of Angola but has recently become active there again. Dan Gertler is "the new kid on the block." He is seen as a rising star in the Israeli diamond industry - and not only in Israel. Israel has long since become too small for his ambitions. Bold, sophisticated, brutal, he is an adventurer with a short fuse ... Until about a year ago, Leviev was the undisputed king of the Angolan diamond market. Arcadi Gaydamak has recently tried to act as a mediator between Gertler and Leviev. He believes that instead of fighting over the wealth of diamonds in Angola they should reach an understanding on dividing the area and cooperate. As part of the battle over the diamonds of Angola, those involved have spent quite a bit of their time in the past few weeks doing intensive lobbying in Luanda, the capital. Last week both Gaydamak and Gertler were there, the latter flying in on a private plane leased from the businessman Yossi Maiman ... Dan Gertler comes from a well-known, veteran family of diamond merchants that has acquired fame, honor and much property. His grandfather, Moshe Schnitzer, who is considered the "king of Israel's diamond industry," last year received the Israel Prize for his "life achievement - a singular contribution to the society and the state." In their grounds for awarding him the prize, the judges noted that Schnitzer "established the Israeli Diamond Bourse, was its president for many years and served as the president of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses." Dan's father, Asher Gertler, and his uncle, Shmuel Schnitzer, manage the family business. His mother, Hanna Gertler (Moshe Schnitzer's daughter) owns the radio station 99 FM .. Today, through his company, DGI (standing for Dan Gertler Israel), which is headquartered on the 24th floor of the Maccabi Building in the Diamond Bourse in Ramat Gan, he is active around the world. He owns a diamond mine and a large polishing plant and has a franchise to expert diamonds from Congo (formerly Zaire). Recently he acquired another mine in Congo, to extract other raw material. He is considered close to Congo President Laurent Kabila, and together with his aide and confidant Haim Leibowitz, is working to enhance the status and image of the Congo regime in the U.S. administration. This week the two flew in the leased plane to accompany Kabila on a visit to China. Gertler also owns a complex network of interconnected companies, some of them registered in tax havens, which run businesses and firms in India, Russia, Belgium and the United States. His name was also mentioned about a year ago in connection with the purchase of a diamond mine in the Canadian Arctic Circle. All in all, a very impressive record for a 31-year-old who just began his race for the top a few years ago ... Gertler is surrounded mostly by religious people and laces his speech liberally with praise to God ... Angola has the potential to become one of the richest countries in Africa. It has a sparse population of 13 million people who live in a vast area of about 1.25 million square kilometers - 60 times the size of Israel. Angola has almost everything: natural minerals, forests, fertile land and rich fishing. Beneath its land and sovereign waters there is abundant oil. It is Africa's second largest oil producer, after Nigeria. It has diamonds, gold, uranium and iron. But Angola is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world. Two-thirds of its inhabitants live in an income of one dollar a day. However, the country's leaders and senior officials and others who are close to the government are considered exorbitantly rich. In the past, Western countries launched investigations to find bank accounts held by Angolan officials. Reports of the United Nations and human rights groups found that between 1997 and 2003, about $1 billion a year, originating in oil exports, disappeared from the state coffers and made its way into private pockets. Bribery in Angola is the norm. Without bribery it is impossible to do business in Angola, says Global Witness, an organization that highlights the link between exploitation of natural resources and human rights abuses. In part, Angola's distress is due to the civil war that raged in the country for 27 years, in which more than a million people died and several million more were wounded. Angola also has the world's largest number of people who have been maimed by land mines, which are strewn indiscriminately around the country. It is common to see dozens of limbless children begging for handouts on the main boardwalk of Luanda or scrounging in garbage cans for scraps of food. The average life expectancy in Angola is 40 years. In 1975, following a blood-drenched liberation struggle, Angola received its independence from Portugal, which had ruled the country for hundreds of years. The civil war erupted shortly afterward ... The war prevented Angola from extracting the full potential of its natural resources ... During the war period, quite a few diamond merchants were active in the country, buying merchandise from both sides - Belgians, Lebanese, South Africans, Portuguese, French and others. Two of the major merchants were Maurice Tempelsman and Benny Steinmetz. Tempelsman, a hefty donor to the Democratic Party in the United States, gained fame as the partner of Jacqueline Kennedy after the death of her second husband, the Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Mainly, though, he is a high-stakes businessman, board chairman of Lazare Kaplan International, the largest diamond company in the United States. Over more than a quarter century, dozens of articles, books and studies have been published about his involvement in the diamond business in Africa. He is said to have assisted the CIA in its project of support for Savimbi. Not surprisingly, he was mentioned in the past as one of the largest buyers of diamonds mined by Savimbi's forces. Tempelsman was also considered the "straw man" of the South African diamond giant De Beers, which had an exclusive hold on the Angolan market ... [T]he Angolan government set up a special company that received an exclusive franchise to export all the diamonds mined in the country. Known as ASCORP (Angola Selling Corporation), 51 percent of the company was held by Sodium, a subsidiary of the Angolan government's diamond company. Other partners, with 24 percent, were associates of Leviev's, diamond merchants from the Laniado family (Guy and Ehud) and Lucian Goldberg from Belgium. The remaining quarter was held by a Swiss company, which according to reports in the international media was owned by Isabel dos Santos. In other words, Leviev and Isabel dos Santos were partners, according to these reports. Leviev has denied this on several occasions. Isabel is the daughter of the president's first wife, a Russian woman [Jewish?] whom he met while studying in the Soviet Union. For the past decade, Isabel, now 31, has been consolidating her position as a businesswoman with great influence - too much, according to Angolans - on the country's economy and internal politics. She is the owner of restaurants on the Luanda coast as well as a cellular phone company and many other assets. She is known for her extravagant lifestyle ... Even though Leviev vehemently denies this, everyone in the industry says that the person who opened doors for him in Angola was Arcadi Gaydamak. Gaydamak is a personal friend of the president. From 1992 to 1995, together with his French partner Pierre Falcone, he organized the financing for arms sales from Russia to Angola. Thanks to these weapons, the Angolan government was able to defeat the UNITA rebels and achieve full control of the country ... Gertler's closest friend is Haim Leibowitz, 34, from the Chabad movement. In the 1996 elections he was the moving spirit behind the aggressive campaign slogan "Netanyahu is good for the Jews." Some analysts maintain that this slogan, which was unveiled not long before voting day, generated a shift in the close race, and led to Shimon Peres' loss. The campaign was funded by the Chabad billionaire from Australia, Joseph Gutnik, who owns gold and diamond mines ... Gertler's big business breakthrough came in 2000. The principal motive was to eliminate the middleman. Gertler decided to invest in Congo, a vast country in Central Africa with a population of 60 million and extensive natural resources including diamonds, gold, uranium, copper and cobalt ... After becoming independent in 1960, Congo experienced a savage civil war. In 1965 the chief of staff, Mobutu Sese Seko, seized power and introduced a cruel, corrupt, despotic regime that turned Congo into a backward country. The average life expectancy there is 41 years, as in Angola. The number of AIDS carriers is thought to be in the millions. Most of the inhabitants are desperately poor. Only a handful of officials, army officers and cronies of the powerful enjoy the country's riches .. Amid this turmoil, the young diamond merchant Dan Gertler arrived in Kinshasa, the capital, at the beginning of 2000 and started to look for ways to reach the new ruler, Laurent Kabila. With the help of local and foreign liaisons, he managed to arrange a meeting. Gertler persuaded Kabila to give him exclusive rights to all the country's diamond exports. It wasn't as difficult as it might sound. Kabila desperately needed cash. Gertler offered to pay $20 million for the monopoly. Kabila accepted and Gertler established IDI (International Diamond Industry), a branch of DGI, in Congo. Kabila had one additional small request: security advice. Gertler did not want to say no, but lacked experience and understanding in security affairs. In a chance meeting at a wedding in Israel, he got to know Yossi Kamisa, who had been a master sergeant in the Border Police anti-terrorism unit (known as Yamam in Hebrew). Kamisa persuaded Gertler that he was not only a daring fighter but also a first-rate military strategist who could create a modern army for Kabila out of thin air and thus enable him to consolidate his power. The details of the agreement between the two remain in dispute. A year ago Kamisa sued Gertler for NIS 2.55 million, for breach of contract ... The court case exposed the fact that in place of Kamisa, Gertler had hired the services of a more highly regarded expert, Major General (res.) Avigdor (Janusz) Ben Gal. Ben Gal, in turn, brought in another retired major general, then unemployed, Meir Dagan, who had tried his luck in arms deals in Africa and is now the chief of the Mossad espionage agency. The three - Gertler, Ben Gal and Dagan - flew to Kinshasa to meet with Kabila and impress him with their know-how. According to documents of the Defense Ministry, Ben Gal contacted Israel Military Industries, which then asked the ministry for permits to conduct negotiations to export light arms and ammunition and train the Presidential Guard in Congo. The documents also indicate that little came of this adventure ... In the wake of the reports generated by Kamisa's suit, Gertler claimed that he was not involved in any arms deals. He says he brought in Ben Gal in order to advise the Congolese government how to improve security at the mines and prevent diamonds from being smuggled out of them. This is a claim commonly made by diamond merchants and other businessmen who find themselves in similar situations. In the view of international human rights organizations and investigative journalists, such actions perpetuate the rule of despots ... [Gertker] has not forgotten his roots. Gertker is financing the Chabad House in Kinshasa, which operates in a community of some 250 families of Israelis and Jews. Chabad House supplies the food for Gertler, Leibowitz and PR man Horev when they visit Kinshasa ... But the relations between Gertler and Leibowitz and Kabila go beyond diamond deals. They also want to help their admired leader and improve his country's poor image in the corridors of power in Washington. In 2002, the president authorized Gertler and the Brooklyn-born Leibowitz to act on his behalf with the U.S. administration. The two met with Condoleezza Rice, then the national security adviser and now secretary of state. She sent them to Jendayi Frazer, a former student of hers who was then responsible for Africa on the National Security Council and is today the U.S. ambassador to South Africa. The two guests asked Frazer to help Kabila and reduce the pressure he was under from human rights organizations. Frazer's meeting with the two Israeli diamond merchants drew criticism from the State Department. Whether thanks to their lobbying or not, President George Bush in November 2003 hosted Kabila in the White House ... For Gertler, Congo and the close ties with Kabila were an important springboard. He serves as honorary consul of Congo in Israel ... To conquer Angola, Gertler is also drawing on his ties with Gaydamak. The size of the franchise Gertler will get in Angola is not yet known, but it is clear that anything he is given will reduce Leviev's holdings in the country ... It may well be that Gertler, Gaydamak and Leviev have already decided to carve up the Angola booty among them. Sources in the Diamond Bourse of Ramat Gan say that Gertler is following the very same path that Leviev created, aiming to dominate the entire chain of production of the diamond industry, from mining, export and polishing to the jewelry store."

The visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University used the anecdote as a segue into his lecture, "Physics and Civics: Jews, Science and Citizenship in the 20th Century," analyzing the complexity behind the Jewish "fondness" for science -- and higher education -- in pre-Cold War America. Efron recounted the origins of the Institute for Advanced Study -- financed originally by Jewish department-store tycoons -- as a frame for understanding the motives underlying the Jewish-American veneration for all things scientific. According to Efron, Jews have had an overwhelming influence on the American scientific community, from donating millions of dollars to schools and institutes to receiving 38 percent of American Nobel Prizes in Physics and 28 percent in Chemistry ... Efron's appearance was jointly sponsored by Orthodox Jewish group Tradition Confronts Innovation and the non-denominational Metanexus Institute."

"Next month, Vladimir Putin will become the first Russian president to visit Israel, arriving at the gates of Jerusalem as a guest of honor and accompanied by 300 people, including top Kremlin diplomats and business tycoons. It's a big shift from the Soviet days, when Kremlin leaders visited only Arab capitals and sold Israel's enemies top-notch weapons. Putin's visit, scheduled for April 27-28, is part of a Kremlin move to re-emerge on the Middle East scene in a more positive way — encouraging democracy and trade throughout the region. "Despite its problems, Russia is a superpower which never gave up its desire to re-establish its influence in the Middle East," Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told American visitors this week. Plus, Putin believes close ties with Israel will reinforce Russian-U.S. relations, coordination and dialogue, Israeli officials said. Sharon is to visit President Bush at his Texas ranch April 11 to discuss Palestinian-Israeli relations. But the visit will also enable him to analyze — with Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, herself an expert on Russia — how to get Putin to promote democratic processes in Middle Eastern nations ... "Bush, Putin and Sharon are completely different from all the other world leaders by their chutzpah and by their audacity," a top Israeli official told The Post. "They are political killers. And when they put those skills together, either in anti-terror global warfare or in politico-economic cooperation, they achieve their goals." Back in the 1960s, Israel was tagged as "the tail of the U.S. imperialistic dog" by the Communist newspapers Pravda and Izvestia. Events since then — including the arrival in Israel of more than 1 million Jews from the former Soviet Union in the 1990s and the activities of Israeli industrialists and businessmen in Russia — have markedly changed the relationship. There has also been secret cooperation between Israel and Russia on the terrorism problem that has vexed both countries. In one case, when Israel helped Russia with a vital problem against terrorists, Putin called Sharon and told him "I love you" — in Russian, a language that Sharon speaks."

"Guess Who" puts the spin on "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" by putting a white guy in the hot seat when he's visiting his African-American girlfriend's family. Ashton Kutcher, who stars as the white guy in the film opening Friday (March 25), says his idea of also making his character Jewish was cut out of the movie at the last minute. The jokes were filmed, but director Kevin Sullivan took out all the references. Kutcher says he originally came up with the idea when he and Bernie Mac discussed the film and brought it to Sony Pictures. "I decided that I wanted to play my character Jewish, to have another difference because Bernie is Christian in the movie and I decided that I wanted to play my character Jewish just to have another difference," Kutcher says, telling Zap2it.com it was minor stuff, like saying, "Shabot Shalom, stuff like that." But Sullivan says he didn't want the racism issue to also get mixed in with the religious issues. "I didn't want people to think it was about Christianity or Judaism," the director says. And so, Kutcher says, "Every Jewish reference that I made in the film got cut out."

Wiesel, who survived Auschwitz and wrote about it in his internationally acclaimed memoir "La Nuit" (Night), will be the guest lecturer Sunday, April 10, at the inaugural University of Arizona Presidential Lecture, co-sponsored by the UA's Arizona Center for Judaic Studies and the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona. Wiesel was selected as the guest speaker by an anonymous donor who thought he would be a good choice because 2005 is the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps in Europe, said Jennifer Fink, of the Jewish Federation. The lecture - "Confronting Fanaticism: Building Moral Unity in a Diverse Society" - will be held in conjunction with a dinner at 4:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the UA Student Union Memorial Center. The dinner will honor UA President Peter Likins and businessman Donald Diamond for their community accomplishments. Diamond and his wife, Joan, were co-contributors of a recent $1 million donation that helped transform the UA's Committee for Judaic Studies into the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies, one of the largest Hebrew and Judaic Studies programs in the country in terms of enrollment and educational outreach."

Yukos oil fugitives find safe haven in the promised land,

"For the Russian government, they are allegedly dangerous criminals who have made off with billions in unpaidtaxes and are wanted on charges that range from embezzlement to murder. For Israel, they are potential valued investors in the country's slowly reviving economy. Two of Israel's normally publicity-shy Russian "oligarchs" this week surfaced to announce their first investment in Israel since they sought refuge there 18 months ago in the wake of the debacle over Yukos, the Russian oil company. In an interview with the FT, Leonid Nevzlin and Michael Brudno, whose Menatep group owns 60 per cent of Yukos shares, outlined a business strategy based on the likelihood that they will not be returning to Russia anytime soon. The two men live a hundred yards from each other in the affluent anonymity of Herzliya, an upscale suburb north of Tel Aviv. Propped against a wall of Mr. Nevzlin's living room is a "Free Khodorkovsky" placard in honour of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the Yukos founder jailed in Russia in October, 2003 on tax evasion and fraud charges. The two men and their partner, Vladimir Dubov, took out Israeli citizenship at about the same time, setting up home in Israel in the hope of avoiding extradition over their alleged role in the Yukos affair. As well as the fraud-related charges, Mr Nevzlin is also wanted in Russia for conspiracy to murder. Mr Nevzlin rejected all the accusations against him and his partners and said they were part of an ideological campaign by Vladimir Putin, Russian president, against the Russian private sector ... Yukos lost 60 per cent of its oil production capacity when the Russian government ordered it to sell off its main subsidiary in December to pay back-taxes. The buyer, state-owned Rosneft, has since filed an $11bn suit against Yukos ... Announcing their investment in Israel, the two men said Menatep was acquiring a stake in the holding company of Israel Petroleum Enterprises. They said they would be looking into further investments in fields within the group's area of expertise. Menatep already has about $100m invested in telecoms companies in eastern Europe. Although the Russian tycoons have maintained a low profile since moving to Israel, they have not managed to escape controversy. Mr Nevzlin's name was among those raised in connection with a current Israeli police investigation into the alleged laundering of at least $500m through a branch of Bank Hapoalim, Israel's largest bank ... In an indication of how important Israel regards investment, Benjamin Netanyahu, finance minister, recently said the money-laundering case had been blown out of proportion. Israel Studies Gain on Campus as Disputes Grow,

"Even as disputes over the Middle East roil Columbia University, the school is announcing the establishment of its first chair in Israel studies. A search committee will meet for the first time this week to begin seeking a professor to fill the Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi chair in Israel and Jewish studies, named after the elder statesman of Jewish studies at Columbia. The new professor will be the latest in a string of Israel studies professors appointed to American colleges in the past several years. Along with Columbia, the University of Wisconsin; University of California, Los Angles, and American University are expected to name Israel studies professors soon. In the past two years, New York University, Brandeis University and the University of Calgary, among others, have made similar appointments. The new faces come from a variety of academic disciplines, but all have focused their work on the State of Israel. Concerns about anti-Israel rhetoric on campus have led to the widespread perception -- often expressed by Jewish organizational officials -- that pro- Israel voices are being overwhelmed and beaten back on American campuses. This image is at least partly belied by what most experts agree is a sudden burgeoning of Israel studies on American campuses. In addition to chairs in the field, the growth has included a new network of Israel studies centers, academic journals and scholarly conferences. "In place of the sense of crisis, there should be a recognition of a growing interest in Israel from the academic point of view," said Michael Stanislawski, Columbia professor of Jewish history, who is heading the search committee for the new professor. Most of this development has occurred in the four years since the outbreak of the second intifada -- and the growth is still in its early stages. According to a chart assembled by the Association for Israel Studies, an organization with 200 members, a dozen centers for Israel studies operate in North America, with some 10 endowed chairs in Israel studies. Almost all of these have been created in the past decade. Significantly, they represent only a fraction of the opportunities for studying Israel on American campuses. Last summer, the recently appointed chairman of Israel studies at Brandeis, Ilan Troen, initiated a summer seminar for college professors interested in teaching courses on Israel. The president of the Association for Israel Studies, Joel Migdal, teaches at the University of Washington, which has neither a chair nor a center for Israel studies. But in the last decade, his own university has taken on four professors who teach courses about Israel ... At a conference convened by Jewish community leaders in early March, Martin Kramer, who has been a leader in the fight against pro-Palestinian academics, said, "These radicals once tenured began a systematic purge of Middle Eastern studies." "By the late 1990s, radicals could look smugly up and down their hallways and see only like-minded colleagues," added Kramer, who is currently a senior associate at the Moshe Dayan Center in Tel Aviv .. University officials [at Columbia] said that the four donors who are providing $3 million for the new chair were brought together before "Columbia Unbecoming" was released. Stanislawski, who chairs of the Columbia search committee, said that the endowment of the Israel chair demonstrates Columbia's long-standing commitment to fostering the study of Israel, which he thinks has been obscured by recent press coverage of the school. "The idea that Columbia is a place that's unfriendly to Jewish students or Israel studies is a calumny," said Stanislawski, who is the associate director of the university's Center for Israel and Jewish Studies. Stanislawski said that his center currently has 13 full-time professors affiliated with it, teaching courses on all aspects of Zionism and Israeli history. The new full-time professor will be joined by a new visiting professor from Israel ... At UCLA, the Israel Studies Program was founded a year and a half ago by Sharon Baradaran, a lecturer in Asian politics at UCLA. She has worked privately to raise more than $1.7 million from the Los Angeles Jewish community to endow a chair and fund a host of visiting professors. She initiated the program with a dean at UCLA's International Institute after hosting a salon at her home during the summer of 2003, when the discussion focused on the growing criticism of Israel at American universities ... All the Israel studies professors interviewed agreed that one of the goals of the field is to take the focus in the region off the Israel-Palestinian conflict and shift it to the broader topic of Israeli culture and society. But some current professors voice concern that donors might think they are paying for an advocate of Israel. ... In the 1960s, Jewish donors poured money into Holocaust studies -- for which there are now dozens of chairs -- and Jewish studies, which is represented today on scores of American campuses. At that time Israel did not captivate the attention of donors, professors said ... The students met on Bondi Beach early on Friday morning, March 11, where they got drunk before going to the school party. They were suspended for the day on Monday, March 14, and when they returned to school the next day, they were told their Year 12 privileges — which include the right to leave the college campus when they do not have class — had been withdrawn until the end of term two (June 28). In addition, members of the Moriah student leadership body involved in the incident were ordered to hand over their badges until they earn them back and to complete an educational program designed in consultation with experts."

"Hebrew daily “Yediot Ahronot” reports that the ministerial state comptroller committee, headed by Minister without portfolio Haim Ramon, has decided to develop biometric identity cards and passports that use physical characteristics, such as finger or palm prints, to identify individuals. A tender for the final development of the technology infrastructure will be published next month. The biometric passport will free travelers from the need for a signature and identifying themselves with an electronic chip. A team headed by Prime Minister's Office general supervisor Uzi Berlinski, an international expert in surveillance, data security, and biometric systems, has been appointed to develop the documents. International companies will be allowed to participate in the tender, on condition that they are represented by an Israeli entity. The biometric documents will be equipped with a miniature processor that will include biometric data of the bearer of the document. A national database of biometric data will also be set up, to make it completely impossible to forge identity cards and passports. Berlinski said, "Today, each person exactly equals the plastic card in his pocket. In the near future, the document will be the person himself."

French Rap Against Jews,

"Jewish groups are questioning the origin of a downloadable anti-Semitic rap song that has recently made its way to e-mail in boxes throughout France, where anti-Jewish sentiments have been on the rise in recent years. Dedicated to “the sons of Jewish whores,” the hateful tune, called “Nique les Juifs,” or “[Expletive] the Jews,” praises Hitler’s determination and compares Jews to cysts that must be removed or burned. The refrain: “To all the Jews, [expletive] your mother/Burn a synagogue, I would love to do that.” Pass Pass, a Villeurbanne, France-based rap ensemble, was initially thought to have penned the song. As suspicion mounted, the group released a statement denying any involvement with the “shameful” song. In addition, the group asked local authorities to locate the song’s authors, thereby clearing their name. Yonathan Arfi, president of the French Jewish student union, UEJF, believes the song comes from a far-right group wishing “to incite violence between Jews and Arabs” in France. As possible evidence of far-right manipulation, Arfi, who called the song “one example of what we [in France] are facing,” said the rap features Arab phrases that are pronounced with a French accent. Xavier Richaud, the district attorney of the Lyon region, where the song is believed to have originated, has been in close contact with local leaders of the French Jewish umbrella group, CRIF. Richaud launched an investigation to determine who is behind the song, and how and where it is being broadcast. Hate speech is not protected as free speech in France. If arrested, the song’s writers and producers could face five years in prison and a fine of 45,000 Euros, or about $60,000. Abraham Foxman, chairman and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, speaking recently to UEJF leaders in New York, said the “ugly, hideous song” was emblematic of how racist or anti-Semitic speech can be propagated with relatively little effort. He added: “With technology today, [a song] doesn’t have to be produced by a major studio” to ensure it is widely circulated."

"Philanthropy watchdogs are criticizing the percentage of funds that a venerable tree-planting charity is spending on its programs. In the late 1990s, the American branch of the Israel-based Jewish National Fund was wracked by scandal over the small share of its revenue that was reaching the parent charity in Israel for land and water development programs. In 1997, a committee was established to help reform the American organization. It issued a report calling for 70% of JNF America's "gross receipts" to be "transmitted to Israel" by 2001, according to a copy of the report, shared with the Forward. The charity's most recent tax filings, however, show that the 70% goal is still distant. Slightly more than 35% of the money raised in America was sent to Israel in grants during 2003. JNF officials say they are focusing more on education in America, but in 2003 education consumed only 8% of JNF's income. The bulk of the remaining money went to pay for fund raising, salaries and administrative costs in the United States. "This charity is woefully behind their peers in how much they allocate to their cause," said Trent Stamp, executive director of Charity Navigator, which evaluates the financial records of 4,000 charities each year. Marc Hager of the Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy said: "If the numbers [they present in their tax forms] are accurate, it's not surprising that watchdogs are raising questions about them. These numbers are well on the high side for any kind of nonprofit organization." ... Jewish National Fund was established in 1901 to buy land for Jewish settlement in the area that was to become Israel. The American branch of the charity began operating in 1926, and it quickly became one of the most prominent symbols of American Jewish philanthropy with its blue tin collection boxes, or pushkes. Today the blue boxes advertise JNF as "Your direct link to the land of Israel." ... In 1997, members of the American charity's board of directors called for reform after public disclosures that less than 20% of the money raised in America was reaching Israel. Tax forms from 1996 indicate that 16% of the $32 million spent by Jewish National Fund in America went that year to Jewish National Fund in Israel ... By 2003, while JNF America was spending $29.3 million, the amount going to Israel had risen to just $11 million. A 2003 audit says that $15.8 million went to "Israel Programs," but according to the chief financial officer, Mitchell Rosenzweig, a little more than $11 million of this was grants to Israel. The rest, about $4.7 million, went to administering and processing that grant money in America ... Last year the Jewish National Fund had 500,000 donors, Robinson said, and it costs money to process each individual donation. By comparison, American Friends of Hebrew University managed to send 80% of the money it spent to its Israeli cause, but it only had 10,000 donors providing all its funds."

"Current and former staff members of the nation's largest gay newspaper chain say the company's top editor thwarted efforts to run a story reporting now-Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman was gay, RAW STORY has learned. The editor denies killing the story. These staffers assert that the part-owner and chief editor for the company's five newspapers including The Washington Blade, Chris Crain, refused to print an article regarding the sexual orientation of the then-campaign manager for President Bush's reelection campaign. One staffer said Crain told others that he had confirmed Mehlman was gay, but refused to provide his sources to other reporters. Chris would confirm it, the staffer said, but he wouldn't give out any names. "He's not going to print anything," another quipped. Crain, who was Mehlman's supervising editor for a Harvard public policy journal in law school and partnered with him in an organization in the early 1990s, says he has not "credibly" confirmed Mehlman's sexuality. He denied that their previous involvement had any bearing on his editorial decisions. The Washington editor's statements about outing, and the allegations of those at his company, are sure to prompt new examination of the reporting on the sexuality of public figures who publicly oppose gay rights. Mehlman has come into particular focus for his use of personal data of voters, including marital status which he says helped Bush win the election."

"It'll be the middle of the night in Israel when top-seeded Illinois tips off, so Deon Thomas won't get to see the game live. As soon as he wakes up Friday, though, Illinois' all-time leading scorer will log on to the Internet, check the score and then go watch the replay. "I'm always going to be an Illini. I'm always going to be a part of the university even though I'm not there anymore," he said from Tel Aviv, where he still plays professionally. "I can't say I'm as excited as those kids are, but I'm real close. I feel like I'm back there." In some ways, he is. The soap opera surrounding Thomas' recruitment - a secretly recorded phone call, allegations of wrongdoing, an NCAA investigation - is being dredged up again as top-seeded Illinois (34-1) plays upstart 12th-seed Wisconsin-Milwaukee (26-5) in the Chicago Regional semifinal Thursday night. UWM coach Bruce Pearl was the one who taped Thomas and turned it over to the NCAA, prompting an investigation that ended with sanctions against Illinois. Everyone involved has moved on, geographically and emotionally, but Illini fans aren't so quick to forgive. Thomas, a Chicago native, was one of the country's top prospects in 1989, and he verbally committed to Iowa. But he later changed his mind, opting to stay close to home and go to Illinois. Pearl, then a young assistant at Iowa, was convinced something shady was going on. So he secretly taped a phone call in which Thomas seemed to confirm that Illini assistant Jimmy Collins had offered him $80,000 and a Chevrolet Blazer. To this day, Thomas denies Illinois did anything improper, saying his comments were simply those of a naive 17-year-old player trying to get Pearl off his back without offending him. "I'm not that person that Coach Pearl tried to say that I was. That's not me at all," Thomas said Tuesday. "For him to go out and tell lies and then pass them off as the truth in order to hurt someone or try to gain some notoriety or whatever he was hoping to get from it, it's wrong." The tape touched off a 16-month investigation by the NCAA. Though Illinois was cleared of the allegations involving Thomas and Pearl's tape, other infractions were found and the Illini were barred from postseason play in 1991. Thomas went on to become Illinois' all-time leading scorer, but he says his ability to trust people was forever shaken. Both Pearl and Collins saw once-promising careers derailed. "It's a tough situation," said Illinois coach Bruce Weber, an assistant at Purdue at the time. "You've got two coaches involved, it's their livelihood. Maybe one guy went a little too far. I don't know. That's not my call. It wasn't good for either person, to be honest. But you've got to go on with life." Pearl is trying. Don't call it 'racism',

"In 1977 Israel's criminal code was changed. Section 144A made "racism" a crime. Racism was defined as "persecution, humiliation, demeaning, displaying animosity, hostility, violence or strife toward a population group or parts of such a group, all on the basis of skin color or membership in a racial or ethnic-national grouping." At first glance, this law seems innocuous enough. After all, who can be in favor of racism or against attempts to eliminate it? But the main problems in this law quickly become clear. First, the law criminalizes some expressions of speech, and so infringes free speech. Second, the definition of "racism" in the law is so vague as to render the entire law arbitrary and useless. Third, in its implementation and enforcement the law has already been used in an arbitrary and anti-democratic manner for partisan purposes. The law has become a bludgeon to suppress free speech selectively, used against some right-wing Israeli Jews. At the same time there has never been any attempt to prosecute Arabs nor left-wing Jewish extremists under the same law. The immediate motivation for the framers of Israel's law was the activities
of followers of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane. The law's purpose was to suppress the freedom of speech of these Kahanists and of some other fringe groups among Israeli Jews. But prosecuting Kahanists for "racism" is inconsistent and arbitrary. Most of the problems with the anti-racism law became clear soon after it was passed by the Knesset. One of the first cases prosecuted under the law was the State of Israel v. Rabbi Ido Elba (Docket 2831/95). Elba had published an article arguing that in the Torah there are separate rabbinic laws applying to killing Jews, covered in the part of the Ten Commandments prohibiting "murder," and the killing of Canaanite non-Jews living among Jews, which was prohibited under a separate law given to all humans descending from Noah. The article was a scholarly exercise in explaining rabbinic laws and especially the commentary on manslaughter by Maimonides. But the publication came out shortly after the massacre of Arabs in Hebron by Baruch Goldstein, and the public and some politicians were looking for a target to prosecute for anti-Arab racism. In April 1995, Elba was convicted under the anti-racism law and sentenced to four years' imprisonment (two of them being a suspended sentence). The Supreme Court upheld the conviction and the sentence the following year. The vagueness of the anti-racism law is extremely problematic. The law's language was so poorly formulated and thought through that it would make statements like "I do not want to date non-Jews," or "I do not like blond women" crimes. Should reading certain passages in the Bible be prohibited because they offend some modern ears? The law explicitly makes advocating discrimination against a demographic group to be racism. But Israel is full of groups advocating discrimination against Jews as part of affirmative action preferences, and, of course, also discrimination against males. Not a single person has ever been prosecuted in Israel for this. Why not? Racism is, after all, a belief or a feeling, albeit an evil one, but a private one. Do we really want a Racism Patrol inspecting bars and poker games, hunting down individuals making racist statements in chat rooms or in salons? The anti-racism law is not merely an assault against free speech, but arguably the most ludicrous law Israel has on its books ... The very fact that assaults against free speech for "racists" are so popular in Israel, especially among the chattering classes, illustrates how shallow, conditional and dubious is the commitment by so many in Israel to democracy."
