"The Arabs are bombing, murdering, mutilating, raping and causing havoc all over the Judeo /Christian world. Israel has nothing to do with it -- nothing! The front page of my LA times today headlined, (besides the Israelis who were savagely bombed in Beersheba) that that these same sub-human savage militants who had killed twelve Nepalese workers want more! More concessions and more blood! They also captured two French journalists as hostages, so as to influence French domestic laws. This is especially interesting since Mr. Jacque Chirac and France has gone out of his way to alienate their western allies and welcome them with open arms into the country They want to pressure the French to change their laws on headscarfs. Otherwise, they were going to kill them. Folks, this is only the beginning. Within five years the required fashion in Paris will the burqas ... President Bush makes speeches regularly about how we've brought democracy to Afghanistan and Iraq. Do you honestly believe these people want or will accept anything that's brought to them in the way of freedom? I haven't even begun to get around to the holocaust which is happening by their rampaging, raping and killing hundreds of thousands in the Sudan by these same Arabs. Personally, in the case of Israel and especially at this point in time, I think this would be the best time to begin to put a plan into place. The first step is to complete, as soon as possible, the security barrier. No matter what the world court or any other hysterical, politically correct audience says for its own self interest. On a personal level , I believe a plan should be implemented where announcements are made that anyone who even tries to bomb anyone in the Jewish state will be shot by bullets soaked in pig blood. Then they will be returned to their families who raise these homicide bombers wrapped in pig skin for burial. Flyers should be dropped in the neighborhoods which harbors them, allows their arms to be smuggled under their houses in tunnels and then dance on the street celebrating the latest Israel disaster, stating it will be bombed with missiles dipped in pig oil. And, then do it! ... It all boils down to the fact that the Judeo /Christian free world is at war with an evil, vicious, seventh century barbaric Islamic culture. These people kill indiscriminately ... I have yet to see one out of the 1.3 billion marching in the street protesting with outrage actions such as these are! Yet, they are quick to dance in the streets and pass out candy at the joy of seeing the carnage in Israel's misfortune ... We have been so caught up in not hurting feelings and trying to show compassion that we have overlooked the master plan which is death and destruction from a culture that has absolutely no reverence for life. Hell, these people probably feel that they're doing a favor to everyone by killing them as the only thing they've been raised to revere is death. "The U.S.-lead allegation that the present crisis in the black African nation of Sudan involves “genocide” was uniformly rejected by an all-black panel discussion cablecast Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, on C-Span. Characterizing the conflict in Sudan as a “civil war”, Akbar Muhammad, a spokesman for the Nation of Islam, asserted that the “complex...humanitarian conflict” is “not about race”. All the panelists agreed on this central point. “It is not genocide, nor is it ethnic cleansing”, said black activist Imam Khalid Abdul-Fattah Griggs. The “humanitarian crisis” is real, but he says the war is about “unequal distribution of resources”. Most, if not all of the participants, had recently toured Sudan. Akbar Muhammad, has spent years on the African continent. He called the genocide charges a “hoax”, claiming additionally that there was “media complicity” in this widely circulated allegation. The conflict is the continuation of a “centuries-old war between (indigenous) farmers and herders”, said Muhammad—not a race war being waged by Arab Muslims against black Africans. The central government of Sudan is headquarted in Khartoum. The leadership there is black and, he noted pointedly, Muslim. Muhammad claims many of the “same actors” who circulated the ephemeral stories about “black slavery” in Sudan in the 90’s are behind today’s propaganda. Why the disinformation? He believes they want to overthrow the Muslim regime now ruling Sudan. Muhammad identifies the Sudanese rebels (and their “propagandists”) as having “strong links to Israel”. Muhammad told the story of how a prominent Zionist Jewish activists recently urged a famous (unnamed) black entertainer to speak out against the “Arab genocide against black Africans”. But the black entertainer was perplexed, as his knowledge of the Sudan consisted only of what he’d heard on TV. After being briefed on the complex (and non-racial) dimensions of the conflict, the celebrity rejected the invitation to singularly blame Arabs. Another panelist, complaining about the media’s sudden interest in Sudan’s plight asked: “Why has the genocide that has gone on for a half century in the land known as Palestine been allowed to pass”?”

Al-Tabtabaei's warning came after Al-Watan asked him on the existence of some unknown sections of Jews, who have been printing Holy Qurans after deleting nearly 50 verses related with Jews and promoting such versions through a special website. They did not stop until they reached the point where they have been damaging the Holy book by changing and deleting verses with the aim of hiding the truth. But the Almighty has promised to safeguard the Holy Quran against any such alterations," Al-Tabtabaei said. "Frankfurt [Germany] police have seized several Arabic books at the world's biggest book fair after Jewish complaints that they breached a German ban on anti-Semitic writing. The Frankfurt Book Fair is giving a special showcase this year to Arabic literature. "The prosecutor's office is checking the accusations," the fair's deputy director, Joachim Kehl, said after the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, which lobbies for Jewish interests, protested about several books being promoted by Arab publishers. Mr Kehl declined to say which books were seized but said organisers acted after the Wiesenthal Centre complained about 13 titles. Among those were three volumes it said called for the destruction of Israel and one that paid tribute to the late spiritual leader of Palestinian militant group Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, killed by Israeli forces in March. The centre's international liaison director, Shimon Samuels, said some of the books contravened German laws, introduced after the Nazi period, which ban incitements to hatred."

"The U.S. government rejected a request Monday from Muslim groups to draw up a list of Islamic charities to which they could donate without being suspected of terrorist ties. Muslim groups said they fear giving to a charity that might make them look suspicious to the FBI. The holy month of Ramadan begins this week, and Muslims are required to give to the poor during that period. "If the government knows there are charities that are misleading the American Muslim community, it's their obligation to help protect these innocent Americans," said Sohail Mohammed, a lawyer for the New Jersey-based American Muslim Union. The request was rejected by the Justice Department, which called it impossible to fulfill. "Our role is to prosecute violations of criminal law," said spokesman Bryan Sierra. "We're not in a position to put out lists of any kind, particularly of any organizations that are good or bad." Since December 2001, numerous Islamic charities in the U.S. have been raided or shut down by federal investigators, including the Dallas-based Holy Land Foundation; two suburban Chicago-area charities, Global Relief Foundation and Benevolence International; and the Sudan-based Islamic American Relief Agency, which has a chapter in Missouri. None of the raids has led to terrorism-related criminal convictions. Mohamed Younes, president of the American Muslim Union, was disappointed by the Justice Department's response. "We are trying to do the right thing and we asked for a little help," he said. "At least we tried."

The government's “Complaint to Revoke Naturalization” claims Almallah paid a woman for a “sham marriage” in 1981 that helped him gain permanent residency and then American citizenship in 1988. But sources tell CBS-11 the motive behind the government effort is Almallah’s long association with the Richardson-based Holy Land Foundation, which the Bush administration shuttered in 2001 and accused of clandestinely providing funds to help the designated terrorist group Hamas deploy suicide bombers against Israeli civilians.Almallah, since remarried, the father of seven U.S.-born children, and the founding owner of the booming 50-store Carpet Mills of America chain, served as a board member of the Holy Land Foundation, according to a 2000 foundation tax return.He has maintained close ties to top foundation officers who the government in July criminally indicted on charges that their fundraising work supported suicide bombings against Israeli citizens. And just in case it wasn't, Kathrada made it clearer still: His sermons repeatedly called for the killing of Jews. Poor old Keegstra. All he ever did was call the Jews power-hungry money-grubbers, and he was convicted of a crime. Kathrada whips up his congregants into a Jew-baiting frenzy -- and tells them to go and actually kill someone -- and he remains free. There's some evidence that his Muslim acolytes actually followed his instructions, too. Rudwan Khalil Abubaker, who attended Kathrada's mosque, was in a fire-fight with Russian troops in Chechnya earlier this year. At least he took his violence outside of Vancouver. The question remains: Why was Keegstra's offensive but non-violent anti-Semitism taken to the Supreme Court, but Kathrada's is tolerated with impunity? Kathrada doesn't just call for the death of Jews. He slams Muslims who dare to believe in peaceful co-existence -- you know, Ottawa's dream of multiculturalism. Kathrada claims such Muslims aren't real Muslims, and no truce with Jews can ever be had. Kathrada also uses his tax-exempt mosque to trumpet the cause of Hamas, a notorious terrorist group responsible for countless suicide bombings. Why hasn't Kathrada been charged with a hate crime? Why haven't he and his mosque been charged under Canada's new anti-terrorism laws for promoting and aiding terrorist groups like Hamas? (To date, not a single charge has been laid under this law.) The answer is obvious. It's easy to pick on a politically incorrect country bumpkin like Jim Keegstra. Some dumb white guy making dumb remarks about Jews -- go get 'em. There's not a well-funded, politically correct Dumb Guy Defence Committee ready to roll for his defence. But ever since 9/11, liberals throughout the West have decided an anti-Arab backlash would be worse than Arab terrorism itself. So true risks like Kathrada are ignored, in the name of not making a fuss. The liberal thinking is that charging someone like Kathrada would only give a bad name to all Muslims. Of course, it would do the opposite -- it would point out that not all Muslims are in league with such terror tactics, and that the few who are will be rooted out. Not charging the handful of Muslims who are haters is like not charging the handful of Italians who are part of the Mafia -- it is a misguided act of political correctness. The majority of Muslims -- we hope -- do not support Kathrada. He should be made an example of, not have excuses made for him. Justice calls for it."

According to The Province, when asked about those views, Kathrada once again defended his characterization of Jews as “treacherous monkeys and pigs.” CJCPR calls upon all three levels of government, religious leaders, ethnic and minority groups, and non-governmental organizations to condemn this egregious attack on Jews. “We are truly dismayed to have learned that such language and hatred is being espoused in a mosque here in Canada. Our concern is that Kathrada's statements could incite violence against Jews. In another lecture, Kathrada lashes out at Israel for killing Hamas founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin last March. "Canadian newspaper readers are being warned not to expect a balanced opinion from their dailies after executive orders from the country’s largest media corporation were given to run a select number of national editorials and homogenize remaining editorials across the country so as not to, among other things, reflect negatively on Israel’s occupation of Arab land. Recently, media giant CanWest Global Communications Corp., owned by Israel (Izzy) Asper and family, announced that beginning Dec. 12 one, but eventually three, editorials a week would be written at corporate headquarters in Winnipeg and imposed on 14 dailies, which include the Vancouver Sun and Province, the Calgary Herald and the Montreal Gazette. CanWest also owns 50 percent of the nationally distributed National Post, which will be subject to the new directives as well. Furthermore, in addition to the imposed editorials themselves, all locally produced editorial column pieces will be forced to conform to reflect the viewpoints of the CanWest Global corporation. CanWest last year became Canada’s dominant newspaper chain when it purchased Southam News Inc. from Conrad Black’s holding company, Hollinger Inc., for a reported $3.2 billion Can. "The media has recently played and quoted statements made by me in several lectures delivered at Dar Al-Madinah Islamic Society. In order to produce a sensational story, I was quoted out of context and thus many allegations have been brought against me. Among those allegations is that I call for the killing of Jews, that I promote anti-Semitism and hatred towards Jews in general and promote jihad (fighting for the sake of spreading religion). Because my comments were taken completely out of context, one may believe these allegations. However, I would like to clarify some of what has been said. 1. On the issue of promoting anti-Semitism and hatred towards Jews as an entire nation/people, then this is false. Anti-Semitism is actually anti-Islamic as it is a form of racism. My understanding of anti-Semitism is that it is the condemnation and hatred of a people because of their Semitic race. This is bigotry and racism and Islam considers it completely unacceptable. Therefore, I as a Muslim, also deem such a matter to be absolutely repulsive and have no tolerance towards it. References to Jews in any of my lectures have always been linked to the Palestinian issue and the Al-Aqsa mosque. Any name-calling has been aimed at those perpetrating crimes and acts of terrorism and showing open aggression towards Muslims. We do not perceive the entire Jewish population as having these traits or qualities. It is not our belief that Jews are sub-human. Rather, I believe that they, and all other peoples of the world, are undoubtedly human beings and the progeny of Adam. I also believe that some human beings may behave like animals on occasion. That does not make them sub-human, no matter who they may be. 2. As to the promoting of Jihad (fighting for the sake of spreading religion), then one has to understand this concept very clearly. It is a matter I have spoken of often and never have I implied that we must constantly battle others. With respect to self-defense, then I do believe that a people who are being persecuted and whose lands are being occupied have a right to defend themselves. I also believe that there are rules of engagement which must be adhered to. Islam is very clear on that. Furthermore, with respect to offensive jihad, then I made it clear, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that many conditions must be met before this is permissible. I have also stated in no uncertain terms that it is not for me or any other average person to make declarations of war. Rather, this must be done by the leaders and people of understanding and knowledge. This type of jihad is similar to what the West does in trying to spread Democracy throughout the world. Once again, I stress that I have not called for anyone to take up arms and kill or carry out acts of violence ... These are perhaps some of the saddest moments of my life that I am presently going through. I am not a conspiracy theorist, and therefore, will first take responsibility for any wrong I may have done; a poor choice of words on occasion and not repeating each and every time I spoke what I meant exactly. At the same time, I must express my disappointment in the media for their irresponsible reporting. It is not new to me, and it has now become more clear than ever that the media are in the habit of cutting and pasting the words of the people in order to sell a story. I can only hope that this trend will change ... Contrary to what the media has tried to portray, I am not a violent nor hateful person. I may have beliefs which others do not agree with, but then again, as humans, it is our nature to differ on many matters. Please understand that I do not call for the genocide of any people, nor do I preach “hatred”. "A man has been arrested in connection with death threats and hate literature found at Ryerson. Kevin Haas, 21, has been charged with two counts of threatening death, and seven counts of mischief under $5,000. The Crown is seeking the attorney general's approval to also charge Haas with hate crimes Haas is not a student at Ryerson, nor is he a member of the Ryerson community. "Haas has been a person of interest because of his relationship with a couple of people on campus," said Det. Matt Moyer, the lead investigator in the case, at a press conference held at Ryerson yesterday. Throughout the years, members of Ryerson's Jewish student group, Hillel knew of Haas from various non-Ryerson events. But the group is not acquainted with him Ryerson security had been on alert since late last week, when both the Arab and Muslim Student Associations found death threats slipped under their office doors."

"Many Arab newspapers have condemned the new US law authorising the State Department to monitor anti-Semitism worldwide and produce annual reports critical of those countries where it is seen to be prevalent. President George W Bush announced a few days ago that he had signed into law the bill authorising the US to rate countries on the way they treat Jews. Most commentators believe it panders to the Jewish lobby in the US and is aimed against Arabs and Muslims. However, one dissenting voice considers it a positive move in the battle against racism. The London-based pan-Arab daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi considers the law "basically racist legislation which is anti-Arab and Muslim under the guise of outlawing anti-Semitism". Accusations of bias "President Bush does not want to acknowledge that Arabs are also a Semitic people who have suffered a great deal from wars launched by him alongside his friend [Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon." Saudi Arabia's Al-Jazirah argues that the promulgation of the law "shows the extent to which the US is prepared to go to protect such an aggressive and renegade state" as Israel. It accuses Washington of "abandoning the principles of international law and justice to put its weight behind such a pariah entity". For another popular pan-Arab daily, Al-Hayat , "this law affirms once again that whatever is in Israel's interest is in America's interest and vice-versa". A commentary in the paper is headlined "God's chosen people". The Palestinian paper Al-Ayyam is convinced that any State Department list of states where anti-Semitism is considered to be a problem will "be a 100% Israeli". 'Foolish policies' Al-Arab al-Alamiyah, a pan-Arab daily with a pro-Libyan stance, argues that the issue "should not be about anti-Semitism but about Israel's racist policies". "Israel refuses to accept this truth and Washington accepts Israel's argument in its entirety when it comes to the definition of anti-Semitism." No wonder, Al-Arab al-Alamiyah believes, that "enmity towards America and its foolish policies in the world is growing". However, another influential pan-Arab daily, Al-Sharq al-Awsat , is convinced the law could turn out to be a force for good."

"A Jewish air stewardess who went to court to prove she married an Arab in London and was entitled to his entire £30 million fortune abandoned her claims today. The three-year legal battle came to a dramatic end when Mr Justice Patten was told that Lesley June Burke had given up her fight to prove that a certificate of marriage to Abdulaziz Al-Bassam at Westminster Register Officer in 1986 was valid. Charles Aldous QC, representing the brother of Mr Al-Bassam, who died of cancer aged 76 in 2001, said Mrs Burke had also abandoned her claim that a will leaving everything to her was valid. "She has also given undertakings not to make any further claims on the estate of Mr Al-Bassam and through her solicitors is apologising for having brought the proceedings." The judge agreed to an application dismissing all the claims. The brother, Abdullah Al-Bassam, had claimed that the marriage was a sham, the will was invalid and he was the true heir under Islamic Sharia Law. He said it was not his brother's signature on the marriage certificate and the will was invalid because his brother had asked to be cremated and to leave goods to a non-Muslim - both of which are against Muslim tenets. Mrs Burke, who is in her mid 50s, had called herself Mrs Al-Bassam and claimed that the man she called her husband was not a devout Muslim but a "Westernised" horse racing fanatic who ignored Islamic prohibitions on drinking and gambling. She claimed they had been forced to keep their marriage secret because of his family's Muslim faith, the fact that she was Jewish and had an illegitimate child. Charles Lloyd, the solicitor representing Abdullah Al-Bassam, said after the short hearing: "This dismissal brings to an end almost three years of litigation for which Mrs Burke has apologised; she has also apologised for the cremation of the deceased. "However. my client and his family are members of an ancient and respected Saudi Arabian Muslim family, and the extreme distress caused to them by the claims Mrs Burke made cannot be exaggerated."

"A complete English transcript of the Bin Laden audiotape released last week has now been posted by al-Jazeera. The Arabic text, for those who can use it, has also been posted. A re-interpretation of the speech, put in motion by the neoconservative organ, MEMRI, has been flying around the web, suggesting that Bin Laden is threatening individual American states if they vote for Bush ... MEMRI was founded by a retired Israeli colonel from military intelligence, and co-run by Meyrav Wurmser, wife of David Wurmser. David Wurmser is close to the Likud Party in Israel and served in Douglas Feith's "Office of Special Plans" in the Pentagon, where he helped manufacture the case that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and was linked to al-Qaeda. David Wurmser, who wants to get up American wars against both Iran and Syria, then moved over to Vice President Dick Cheney's rump national security team. MEMRI is funded to the tune of $60 million a year by someone, and is a sophisticated anti-Arab propaganda machine. The organization cleverly cherry-picks the vast Arabic press, which serves 300 million people, for the most extreme and objectionable articles and editorials. It carefully does not translate the moderate articles. I have looked at newspapers that ran both tolerant and extremist opinion pieces on the same day, and checked MEMRI, to find that only the extremist one showed up. It would sort of be as though al-Jazeera published translations of Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Jerry Falwell on Islam and the Middle East, but never published opinion piences on the subject by William Beeman or Dick Bulliet. MEMRI is enormously popular with strong Jewish nationalists in the United States, who often subscribe to it by email, and are being given an unbalanced view of the region as a result. In some instances the translations are not very good, but the main objection is the selectiveness of the material. MEMRI is one of a number of public relations campaigns essentially on behalf of the far rightwing Likud Party in Israel that tries to shape American perceptions of Muslims and the Middle East in a negative direction. Think tanks like the "Hudson Institute" are another (it is run by . . . Meyrav Wurmser). The Benador talent agency, which books a lot of talking heads on US television, is another. (Google it).It would be just as easy to set up a translation service that zeroed in on racist and "Greater Israel" statements in the Hebrew Israeli press and made the articles available in English, while ignoring more liberal newspapers like Haaretz. If most educated Americans heard the raving against "ha-aravim" (the Arabs) that goes on among West Bank settlers, they'd be completely taken aback by the bigotted terms of reference. Much of such Likudnik discourse is not different in kind from what one hears from the Ku Klux Klan about minorities in this country."

B'nai Brith official quits after terrorism remark,

"An official with B'nai Brith Canada resigned after statements he made on The Michael Coren Show that Israel's use of state-sponsored terrorism is justified to protect its citizens. Adam Aptowitzer, former Ontario chairman of B'nai Brith Institute for International Affairs, apologized for the comments, and the organization announced yesterday it had accepted his resignation. His remarks were condemned by Muslim groups, including the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Canadian Arab Federation and the National Council on Arab Relations. The groups said Mr. Aptowitzer's apparent endorsement of terrorism did not receive the same degree of scrutiny by the news media as Mohamed Elmasry's controversial statement on the same program that all Israeli citizens over 18 are fair targets for Palestinian suicide bombers. Mr. Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, later apologized for his comments, but his organization did not accept his offer to resign. Mr. Elmasry and Mr. Aptowitzer were panelists, along with Irfan Syed, a Muslim lawyer, and Peter Merrifield, a terrorism and security consultant, on the Oct. 12 Michael Coren Show, broadcast by the Crossroads Television System. In a heated debate, they discussed the topic What is a Terrorist? Faisal Joseph, the CIC's national legal counsel, said yesterday that Mr. Elmasry's and Mr. Aptowitzer's comments were divisive. "Let there be no misunderstanding. Dr. Elmasry's and Mr. Aptowitzer's comments were totally inappropriate and offensive to many Canadians, both Muslims and non-Muslims. "It was one of the first times that a national Jewish organization's representatives not only admitted that Israel uses terrorism against innocent Palestinian civilians but actually tried to justify it as an ethical use of terrorism," Mr. Joseph said. "Terror is an option to be used by states in order to prevent deaths of their own citizens and of others," Mr. Aptowitzer said. B'nai Brith said in a statement: "[We] reiterate our position that the measures Israel is forced to take to protect itself against ongoing Palestinian terrorist attacks against its civilians constitute legitimate self-defence, and not 'state terrorism.' "A federal judge found two U.S.-based Islamic charities and an alleged fund-raiser for the Palestinian militant group Hamas liable for damages Wednesday in the 1996 shooting death of an American teenager in Israel. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys said the defendants clearly knew the charitable funds they sent to Palestinian groups on the West Bank were destined for Hamas and that the group was involved in terrorism. Stephen J. Landes, an attorney for the parents of the slain David Boim, said it was the first time a court had held U.S.-based organizations liable for terrorism abroad. Keys ordered a Dec. 1 jury trial to decide how much must be paid by Texas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, the Islamic Association for Palestine and alleged Hamas fund-raiser Mohammed Salah of Chicago. "This is a huge win for victims of terrorism," Landes said. "It shows the law works." Boim's parents are seeking $600 million, though attorneys say there's little chance of collecting that amount. Boim, 17, a yeshiva student, was shot and killed in 1996 while waiting for a bus in the West Bank. One of his Hamas attackers was caught and sentenced to 10 years in prison; the other died in a 1997 suicide bombing. Boim's parents claim money from the charities found its way into Hamas coffers and therefore financed the type of violence that killed their son. Holy Land Foundation attorney John Boyd said the charity had been unfairly singled out and called it "an enormous disappointment" that the judge found it liable before the case could go to a jury. Attorney Brendan Shiller, representing the Islamic Association for Palestine, said the judge's decision "dangerously stretches theories of liabilities so you no longer have to prove cause and effect." "We're definitely going to appeal," he said. "Jewish groups have objected to a French government decision to allow the television arm of Lebanon's Hizbollah guerrillas to continue broadcasting to Europe using a French satellite operator. The CRIF umbrella group of French Jewish organizations accused the government of failing to protect citizens from broadcasts by Hizbollah's al-Manar TV, which CRIF says includes anti-Semitic films that incite Muslims to attack Jews. "We French citizens are under attack as Jews by this television," CRIF president Roger Cuikerman said Friday. Arabic-language satellite television is popular with France's five million Muslims, mostly of North African descent. Al-Manar angered groups representing France's 600,000 Jews last year when it broadcast a series about a Zionist plot to dominate the world during the high-viewing month-long Islamic festival of Ramadan. CRIF had sought to ban al-Manar and condemned this latest decision by France's Higher Audiovisual Council (CSA) to allow it to keep broadcasting over French satellite operator Eutelsat. "The Republic should protect all its citizens and not give in to external pressures," Cuikerman said in a statement. The CSA announced the agreement with al-Manar Friday in a document containing a long list of commitments to unbiased journalism that al-Manar must accept to continue broadcasting. In its statement, the CSA declared that some broadcasts it had viewed broke French law because they could incite hate or violence against people for religious or national reasons and stoke tensions between different groups living in Europe."

"After six years of legal wrangling, a major hate-speech hearing over a Muslim radio broadcast that denied the existence of the Holocaust is expected to be held in Cape Town next year. The proposed hearing was preceded by legal action between the South African Jewish Board of Deputies and the Islamic Unity Convention (IUC) and the Broadcasting Monitoring Complaints Committee. It has also been the subject of High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court applications. The IUC owns Cape Town station Radio 786, which, in May 1998, broadcast a programme entitled "Zionism and the State of Israel: an in-depth analysis". During the broadcast, author and historian Dr Yaqub Zaki contended that Jewish people were not gassed in concentration camps during World War 2 but had died "from infectious diseases, particularly typhus". Only about a million Jews had died, he said, adding that "holocaust" was a fairly recent term for something that used to be called the "final solution". Zaki also referred to the co-operation of the Jews and the British in allegedly acquiring South Africa's mineral wealth to finance their occupation of Palestine. He also questioned the legitimacy of the state of Israel and Zionism as a political ideology. The Board of Deputies laid a complaint with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission a month after the programme, prompting a series of legal tussles that ended in the Constitutional Court declaring part of the authority's code of conduct to be unconstitutional. Broadcasting committee chairman Roland Sutherland SC decided in October 2002 that the board's complaint did not warrant a formal hearing. The board took his decision on review to the Johannesburg High Court, where it was set aside by Mr Justice Franz Malan. The judge ruled that a formal hearing should be held to determine whether the controversial programme broadcast had contained Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. "The question whether the (broadcast) may amount to the type of hate speech forbidden by the constitution raises complex legal questions, not only in South Africa, but elsewhere."

Excuses to hate Jews won't go away with Arafat,

"There is always a reason to hate Jews. You can hate them because you know they control the banks or the media. You can hate them for being more successful than yourself. There is always the old standby of their having killed Christ. The Palestinian situation has been a boon for Jew haters, because it gives them a reason that goes down well in polite society. You can hate Jews on account of Israel, and its control of the territories occupied after the Six Day War. And you can hate Israel as a proxy for the Jews, damning it for lapses you shrug off in other countries. The temptation is to challenge the reasons. To point out that the 1967 war was the third fight for its life Israel had faced in 20 years, that the territory was taken to buffer neighbors set on overrunning and destroying it. But you'd be missing the point. The hate isn't there because of the reasons. It wouldn't vanish without them. There is, as I said, always a reason, and the reason is there to try to justify the hate. I wrote this week about Arafat not deserving to die in his bed in peace in Paris. That drew scores of e-mails, all making the same argument: What about Ariel Sharon? Didn't the prime minister of Israel kill people? Well, yeah, soldiers do that. But the thing to remember about Sharon is this: The Palestinians elected him. Israel worked its way through several moderate leaders whose overtures went nowhere, before, under attack and in despair, they brought in Sharon. But again, I'm being drawn into argument with those who wouldn't accept Israel if Winnie the Pooh were prime minister. History is not a balance. If I go shoot a U.S. soldier, I can't defend myself by citing the My Lai massacre. Murder has no moral authority. If Cherokees blow themselves up in Omaha, it doesn't matter if they once owned the land under the city. They don't anymore. That is a lesson Palestinians have yet to learn."

"I hope that Yasser Arafat gets better. In fact, I'm pulling for a complete recovery. Even if he's dead by the time you read this, I hope he springs back to life. Re-incarnates. Because there is something deeply unfair in the prospect of his dying surrounded by friends and family in a hospital bed in Paris. Not when, if there were any sort of justice in the world, he would perish lying on his side on a gravel street, howling without company or comfort after having a long splinter of metal blasted through his eye. The man is a killer. Not only has he killed people himself, personally, but he plotted and organized murders of hundreds of victims. He is one of the authors of a philosophy of random murder that has inspired millions. That he spent years as a sham statesman, received in the White House and heaped with honors is one of the mind-boggling ironies of our ironic age. The man was given the Nobel Peace Prize, which washed away whatever shred of worth that might have clung to the once-respected bauble after they gave it to Henry Kissinger. They might as well pack the thing in a box of manure and straw when they hand out the next one. Arafat's worst crime? He betrayed his own people. He could have led them to peace, and instead led them down a blind alley to self-destruction and disaster. When he dies -- any moment, judging by the reports -- the news media will no doubt focus on Arab mourning. And there will unfortunately be a few Jews leaping around in Jerusalem, grinning and cheering and burning Palestinian flags, though that really isn't our style. But someone should point out what a shame it is to see Arafat go, as opposed to lingering horribly for a long, long time -- maybe just an hour for every child he had a hand in maiming. Because his manner of death is an affront to justice. It makes the most devoted agnostic yearn for a vengeful God and His furnace of hell."

"The all-news MSNBC, which recently got the go-ahead for unrestricted access to Canada's digital dial, may have run afoul of our hate laws when its Imus In The Morning advocated dropping a bomb on Palestinians to "kill 'em all." Both the RCMP and the federal broadcast watchdog are on the case, investigating complaints from some two dozen Canadians. They include Paul Jay, best known as the independent producer behind CBC Newsworld's recently cancelled counterSpin. "I watched (Imus) and immediately I was outraged," he told me yesterda. Morning jock Don Imus, whose syndicated shock-talk radio show is simulcast on MSNBC, was probably just joking when he and his crew made racist, derogatory remarks during coverage of Yasser Arafat's funeral on Nov. 12. But many Americans, and obviously a few Canadians, weren't laughing when they caught this exchange between Imus, his sports anchor Sid Rosenberg and their producer Bernard McGuirk over images of the crowds mourning the death of the Palestinian leade.

After intense lobbying by community groups, the channel got the go-ahead for Canadian carriage last July, but with so many restrictions that no Canadian distributor will pick it up."

The channel signed an undertaking not to incite hatred or violence.Anti-Semitism has recently become a sensitive issue in France after a big rise in attacks on Jewish targets. Jewish groups in France have protested in particular about a series on al-Manar portraying Zionism as a criminal conspiracy. Al-Manar argues that it is not anti-Semitic, but anti-Israeli. It says moves to ban it have been orchestrated by Israel for political reasons ... In order to be allowed to continue broadcasting to France, it recently signed an agreement with the French broadcasting authorities not to show programmes that might incite violence or hatred on religious or national grounds. The head of the CSA described it as the most rigorous ever imposed on a TV network. But pressure to ban al-Manar has not let up - its output has been closely watched for signs of anti-Semitism. Last week, monitors recorded a commentator on the channel speaking of what he called "Zionist attempts to transmit Aids to Arab countries". On Wednesday, the CSA asked the highest administrative court in France to suspend the channel. In his comments to the Senate, Mr Raffarin said he regretted there was currently no law to allow the government to ban the station immediately, but pledged to work towards introducing one. Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom has congratulated France for moving against al-Manar."
