report: 80% of Palestinians killed in curfew violations are children, Jerusalem Post, October 16, 2002 "Israeli human rights group B'tselem on Wednesday accused the IDF [Israeli Defense Force] of frequently using gunfire to enforce curfews in Palestinian cities in the West Bank, and said 12 of at least 15 Palestinians killed for apparent curfew violations in the past four months were under the age of 16. 'Curfew is no longer a tool to meet specific security needs, but a sweeping means of collective punishment,' according to the report, 'Lethal Curfew,' issued Wednesday by B'Tselem. 'The prolonged curfew has made Palestinian life in the West Bank intolerable.' The report said that at least 15 Palestinians had been killed and many more wounded for being out of their houses during curfews since mid-June, when Israel occupied seven West Bank towns in response to a series of deadly suicide bombings. Twelve of those killed were under the age of 16, constituting 80 percent of those killed." |
