THE CHABAD LUBAVITCHERS

"What emerged for me, from the study of the first chapters [of Sefer Hatanya, the central works of the Chabad ultra-Orthodox organization] and their antecedents was the discovery that the main stream of Jewish thought is permeated by genetic spiritual superiority of Jews over Gentiles, disconcertingly reminiscent of racist notions of our time. Living in Israel for the past twenty years in a Jewish majority that is no more sensitive to the feelings of minorities than Gentile majorities are ... [with] Jews in their midst, I have come to realize the vitality of Jewish racist notions, and I am more than ever convinced that the hold Judaism will have on this and future generations will be gravely impaired unless these notions are neutralized by an internal reordering of traditional values."
Moshe Greenberg,
A Problematic Heritage. The Attitudes Toward the Gentile in the Jewish Tradition: An Israeli Perspective.
Conservative Judaism, Winter 1996, p. 33.

"The difference between a Jewish and a non-Jewish person stems from the common expression: 'Let us differentiate.' Thus, we do not have a case of profound change in which a person is merely on a superior level. Rather, we have a case of 'let us differentiate' between  totally different species. This is what needs to be said about the body: the body of a Jewish person is of a totally different quality from the body of [members] of all nations of the world ... A non-Jew's entire reality is only vanity. It is written, 'And the strangers shall guard and feed your flocks' (Isaiah 61:5). The entire creation [of a non-Jew] exists
only for the sake of the Jews."

BROWNFELD, A.,

Incredibly, in 1995, the American Congress posthumously awarded Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, head of the Chabad Orthodox movement, the Congressional Gold Medal -- "the country's highest civilian honor." U. S. Senators and "more than 20 ambassadors and othe embassy officials" attended the dinner honoring Schneerson. [BATOG, J., 7-3-95, p. 4] Why was such Jewish racism heralded by Congress?
"Rabbi Schneerson," explained the Baltimore Jewish Times,
"was the first religious figure to get the coveted medal, which was approved
by Congress last October. More than a year of intensive lobbying by Chabad
forces generated some 225 House co-sponsors of the authorizing legislation.
Copies of the gold medal -- which was underwritten by donations from admirers of Rabbi Schneerson -- are being sold by the Treasury Department. According to
Washington sources, that could be a big moneymaker for the federal government."

Subject: Michael Samuels Reports On Media Blackout. Quebec Government Funds Racist Jewish Cult That Claims All Christians and Muslims Are 'Evil,'
MSA News (Moslem Student Association), October 16, 1999
[cached at google.com]
"My name is Michael Samuel. I am a former professor in the Judaic studies department of Concordia University, Montreal, and I have a question for you: What would you do if a racist cult tried to build its headquarters in your neighborhood? What if the cult targeted specifically young people, teaching them that all Christians and Muslims are:- 1. evil, Satanic creatures from birth (making all Gentile babies "little demons"); 2. no better than worms; 3. not really living beings at all, but already 'dead;' 4. all to be forcibly converted or subjugated by the 'Messiah,' whose arrival it is their sacred duty to hasten. These are just some of the racist teachings of the fanatical messianic cult named 'Chabad-Lubavitch.' This cult, masquerading as 'authentic Judaism,' has been promised nearly one million dollars in funding by the government of Premier Lucien Bouchard of Quebec in order to build its new religious complex in Cote St. Luc, Montreal. Why should you care? Because Chabad-Lubavitch is not just our problem, it may be yours as well. It is an extremely powerful, worldwide organization. Its power has until now intimidated the media, who are afraid to expose the evidence of racism produced here to the public, lest they be accused of anti-semitism. We desperately need your help in breaking this media blackout. Chabad-Lubavitch preys on young people in search of religious identity and meaning. It is aggressively missionizing and spreading its religious bigotry around the globe, especially on university campuses. Chances are, there is a Chabad-Lubavitch presence in your city already. Here are three typically racist passages taken from the basic textbook of Chabad-Lubavitch called 'Likute Amarim' or 'Tanya.' It is one of the primary texts used in their indoctrination or 'outreach' programs. Please note that I am using their own, officially sanctioned English translation (published by their 'Kehot Publication Society' New York -- London, 1973). In the very first chapter of this work, we read: 'The souls of the nations of the world (i.e. all Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, etc.), however, emanate from the other, unclean `kelipot' (evil forces) which contain no good whatever" (page 5). Further on, we read: "However, the `kelipot' (evil forces) are subdivided into two grades, one lower than the other. The lower grade consists of the three `kelipot' which are altogether unclean and evil, containing no good whatever. ... From them flow and derive the souls of all the nations of the world (i.e. all Christians, Muslims, etc.), and the existence of their bodies, and also the souls of all living creatures that are unclean and unfit for consumption' (chapter 6, page 25). Thus, Chabad-Lubavitch lumps non-Jews together with pigs, snakes and worms, and all other 'creatures that are unclean and unfit for consumption.' The third passage leaves absolutely no doubt as to their racist and religious bigotry: 'To elucidate still further, it is necessary to clarify the meaning of the verse, `The candle of God is the soul of (neshamah) of man.' What it means is that the souls of Jews, who are called 'man,' are, by way of illustration, like the flame of the candle, whose nature it is always to scintillate upwards... Now this is a general principle in the whole realm of holiness... This stands in direct contrast to the so-called `kelipah' (evil forces) and `sitra achara' (the other, evil side), wherefrom are derived the souls of the Gentiles... Therefore they (the Gentiles) are called `dead'..." (chapter 19, page 77 and 79). This text makes it clear that for Chabad-Lubavitch, only Jews are considered human ('called man'). They teach that non-Jews are sub-human creatures who barely even qualify as living beings (they are called 'dead'). If you would like to receive photocopies of these quotations which are taken verbatim from the Chabad-Lubavitch textbook (Hebrew original with their own official English translation), please send me your mailing address. If you would like to learn more about the hatred preached by Chabad-Lubavitch via email, especially about the theoretical (Kabbalistic) underpinnings of their 'metaphysical racism' please write me at: Michael Samuel ... Sin City Shaliach
,
Jewish Journal of Metropolitan Los Angeles
, November 16, 2001
"Rabbi Shea Harlig, father of seven and founder of the Desert Torah Academy, is first of three Chabad shlichim (emissaries) sent here, and he doesn’t find anything unusual about living in the center of Sin City ... Now, the center of Vegas Chabad is a $1.5 million building, which was donated by Sheldon Adelson, owner of the luxurious Venetian on the famous Strip. This building houses the school (complete with a state-of-the-art computer lab, physical education instruction and 120 students), a mikvah, offices and a shul. On any given Shabbat, one finds a surprising number of men sporting black hats and long beards, and the services are spirited in a way that is reminiscent of shteibls in religious enclaves like Crown Heights — not hot and sunny places where palm trees line the streets and bright lights beckon to reckless endeavors. There are also two other Chabad houses in different suburbs, as well as various social, welfare and community services ... Yet, in true Chabad style, Harlig imagines that all problems will be solved with the coming of the Messiah. 'I envision when Moshiach will come, all the [Las Vegas] hotels will be big yeshivas [orthodox Jewish religious schools]. All the rooms will become dorm rooms, the big dining rooms will be where we will eat and the casinos will become learning halls. That is why I think these hotels were all built — so that they can become yeshivas."

Russian Rabbi Confident in Putin, Washington Post, November 14, 2001
"The chief rabbi of Russia [who is a Chabad] flew home Wednesday convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to fight anti-Semitism and 'eradicate it completely.' Rabbi Berel Lazar led a delegation of a half-dozen Russian and American Jews that met with Putin Tuesday night at the Russian Embassy. 'The meeting proved to me the commitment of President Putin for the well-being of Russian Jewry, his commitment to fighting anti-Semitism in any form in Russia and letting Russian Jews travel freely and retain their dual citizenship [i.e., Russian and Israeli citizenship],' Lazar said in a telephone interview from his airplane ... 'Jewish identity is our biggest problem,' the rabbi said. 'Seventy percent of Jews haven't come forward to identify as Jews. They used to be ashamed of being Jewish.' But now, Lazar said, 'there is a pride in being Jewish,' although it has not reached Jewish communities in remote areas of Russia. Synagogues are being returned to Jewish control and religious schools are being built."

A Messianism Some Call Heresy, Jerusalem Post, October 19, 2001
"Chabad is a potent force: 2,600 institutions around the world, large numbers of English-speaking rabbis, control of most of Judaism in Italy as well as the chief rabbinate of Russia (its Russia budget alone is $20 million a year). It is an organization with immense world-wide financial resources ... In fact, Chabad is a movement of monumental importance. Observant Jews are profoundly dependent on its emissaries all over the world, it plays a major role in kosher food preparation and supervision worldwide, its rabbis dominate or are poised to dominate Jewish communities in a startling number of countries."

Haredim, Shas, NRP and Chabad, All Under One Zionist Roof,
Haaretz (Israeli newspaper), January 2, 2001
"What's really important," [Eliezer Sheffer] went on, 'is that 60 percent of Jewish education in the former Soviet Union is provided by Chabad, and much of the rest by other Haredi organizations.' He noted that tycoon Lev Levayev, himself Orthodox and a guest of honor at the event, 'brings hundreds of youngsters [from there] to Israel. Religious Zionism only has one school there.'"

In Defense of Dr. Laura, The Jewish Homemaker
"It was at this time that, as she humorously puts it, she [famous radio talk show host 'Dr. Laura Schlessinger], [husband] Lew, and [son] Deryk elected to 'upgrade' their Jewish status. Having become aware that a Conservative conversion did not pass muster in the eyes of traditional Judaism, the family flew to Canada, where Rabbi [Reuven] Bulka converted Laura, Lew, and Deryk k’halachah, in accordance with traditional Jewish law. Deryk now attends Shalhevet, a yeshivah in Los Angeles. This summer he went to Israel with Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis. Today the family makes its spiritual home at the Chabad of the Conejo, in Agoura, California, and has developed a close relationship with the synagogue’s leader, Rabbi Moshe Bryski. Dr. Laura recalls their first visit to the shul. 'The first person we saw said, ‘Welcome. Would you like to come to our house for lunch?’ Everyone was just so nice. We all liked it a lot, so that’s been home.' She says of Orthodoxy: 'I’m enthralled with the mentality' of people actually living their beliefs."

Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel,
Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, March 2000
"Common to both the Talmud and Halacha, Orthodox religious law, is a differentiation between Jews and non-Jews. The late, highly revered Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the 'Lubovitcher Rebbe' who headed the Chabad movement and wielded great influence in Israel as well as in the U.S., explained that, 'The difference between a Jewish and a non-Jewish person stems from the common expression: ‘Let us differentiate.’ Thus, we do not have a case of profound change in which a person is merely on a superior level. Rather, we have a case of ‘let us differentiate’ between totally different species. This is what needs to be said about the body: the body of a Jewish person is of a totally different quality from the body of [members] of all nations of the world…A non-Jew’s entire reality is only vanity. It is written, ‘And the strangers shall guard and feed your flocks’ (Isaiah 61:5). The entire creation [of a non-Jew] exists only for the sake of the Jews…' Rabbi Schneerson always supported Israeli wars and opposed any retreat. In 1974 he strongly opposed the Israeli withdrawal from the Suez area. He promised Israel divine favors if it persisted in occupying the land. After his death, thousands of his Israeli followers played an important role in the election victory of Binyamin Netanyahu. Among the religious settlers in the occupied territories, the Chabad Hassids constitute one of the most extreme groups. Baruch Goldstein, the mass murderer of Palestinians, was one of them."

Lubavitcher Annual Telethon Creates an Enduring Mystery
, Jewish Bulletin of Northern California, September 3, 1999
"One of the enduring mysteries of Los Angeles Jewish life is Jon Voight. Each year, Jews turn on their televisions to see the Oscar-winning actor, who isn't Jewish, dancing the hora with a Chassidic rabbi, appealing to viewers to give money to the rabbi's cause, and generally looking like a yeshiva bocher on Simchat Torah. And each year, Jews turn to one another and ask: What's that all about? And it's not just Voight. Anthony Hopkins, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Danza, Edward James Olmos and Carroll O'Connor, among dozens of stars, turned up Sunday at the studios of the annual Chabad Telethon to show their heartfelt support to West Coast Chabad founder and telethon creator Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin. It aired in the Bay Area on KTSF-TV, Channel 26. This year, Vice President Al Gore added his voice to the fund-raising appeal via a videotape. For weeks before the telethon, Los Angeles is awash in giant billboards that feature a stylized image of the dancing rabbi. One year, he popped up on every Vons grocery bag. It's a level of publicity beyond the dreams or abilities of most Jewish organizations in town. Come telethon time, the high profile pays off with big bucks. Sunday's telethon brought in more than $4.7 million, according to Chabad Lubavitch. But along with the high profile comes, of course, the carping. As much as people love to love Chabad, there are those who love to hate it. The whisper campaign of allegations can be deafening. It's important to note that none of the worst charges that have arrived on our desk comes with any hard evidence ... If 20 years ago a devout, bearded rabbi had asked you whether a relatively small group of Jews in traditional black garb who adhere to an Orthodox, non-egalitarian interpretation of Jewish practice could raise millions of dollars on television and attract Hollywood and music industry stars, you would have said, 'Yeah, right, and how about an Amish game show while you're at it.' But Cunin pulled it off. And this is how: His organization knows how to convey its passion for Jewish life."

Netanyahu Woos LA Jews,
Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, January 18, 2002
"In Los Angeles this week — at the Chabad of the Marina and the Golan Fund Humanitarian Award Dinner — [former Israeli prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu didn’t comment specifically on plans to run, but he did speak generally about security in Israel and the world. In an eloquent speech to some 600 friends of Chabad of the Marina at The Regent Beverly Wilshire hotel on Sunday night, Netanyahu focused on refuting the Palestinian claim that 'the Jews have stolen our land' from a historical, legal, political and demographic perspective. The event was dedicated to the deeds and teachings of Rabbi Menachem. M. Schneerson, and Netanyahu recalled a conversation he had with the Lubavicher Rebbe in the 1980s. 'He urged me to light a candle of truth in the House of Lies, by which he meant the United Nations,' said Netanyahu, who closed his address by exhorting his listeners to 'light a candle for truth, for the Rebbe, for Israel and for the future of our people.'"

Ari Fleischer: Reform Lubavitch, by James Besser,
Baltimore Jewish Times, 10/26/2001, V.262, N.8, p. 30
"Like that of most high-ranking White House officials, press secretary Ari Fleischer's life has been an exhausting blur since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But he took a few hours off last week to pick up an award from American Friends of Lubavitch, and to help boost the group's extensive Jewish outreach efforts on Capitol Hill -- efforts that Mr. Fleischer, a former congressional staffer, has supported from the beginning. He was given the group's Young Leadership award and Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) was the night's honoree at a dinner that drew hundreds of Washington political bigwigs, Capitol Hill staffers and Washington money people. Mr. Fleischer was an early leader and co-president of Chabad's Capitol Jewish Forum, which brings together lawmakers and congressional and administration staffers for Jewish events study ... In a show of bi-partisanship, both Mr. Fleischer and Mr. Lieberman lavished praise on the active Chabad effort that emphasizes the army of young staffers in government and political jobs."

Rabbi vs. Rabbi,
Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, March 22, 2002
"Last Monday night, shots were fired into the front window of the Living Judaism Center (LJC) in Marina del Rey and into a car belonging to center board member Harris Toibb. Toibb is a major supporter of LJC, which is involved in a public legal battle for control of the property at 2929 Washington Blvd. in Marina del Rey, currently occupied by LJC and formally known as Chabad of the Marina. The struggle has pitted two charismatic leaders against each other, and brings into question the right to dissemination of Chabad Torah teachings in Los Angeles. At press time there was an active effort within the Chabad community to bring both parties to a mutually agreed beit din (rabbinical court), which will bring a resolution between the sides. If both parties agree to go to the rabbinical court, all civil litigation will be revoked. The skirmish between Rabbi Shmulik Naparstek of the LJC and Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin of Chabad of California has been percolating for some years. The trouble began in October 2000 when Barron’s magazine published the article 'Unholy Gains: When stock promoters cross paths with religious charities, investors had best be on guard,' in which Naparstek admitted that he received a gift of stock from Australian financier Joseph Gutnick. (No charges were ever filed against Naparstek, and he denies any wrongdoing.) For the next year, Cunin and Naparstek traded letters over the matter, and in January, Cunin fired Naparstek. Naparstek then filed for control over the synagogue, and on March 4, Cunin’s legal team filed a counter-complaint in the Los Angeles Superior Court accusing the Chabad of the Marina of ties to 'an alleged international stock manipulation scheme.'"

Bush Meets Lubavitch Rabbis to Mark Rebbe's 100th Birthday,
Haaretz [Israeli newspaper], March 26, 2002
"U.S. President George W. Bush hosted a delegation of 10 leading rabbis and officials from the Lubavitch Hasidic movement at the White House yesterday. The 90-minute meeting took place in the framework of events organized by the movement to mark the 100th birthday of the late Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson ... Bush added his signature to a document declaring the late Rebbe's birthday 'The day of education and charity.' [Avraham] Rabbi Shem-Tov thanked the president for his support of Israel and presented him with a Passover Haggadah."

In Israel, Distressed Signals from Ethiopians,
Christian Science Monitor, May 22, 2002
"The gap between black and white Israelis seems, with some exceptions, to be growing. For Ethiopians, it is visible in impoverished neighborhoods, soaring unemployment, and the highest high-school dropout rate of any Jewish group in Israel. Twenty-six percent of Ethiopian youths have either dropped out or do not show up for classes most of the time, raising concerns that the community's current difficulties may become chronic. Drug use, including glue-sniffing, is on the rise, and criminal activity, hardly known among Ethiopians before they came to Israel, has been growing ... to Asher Elias, a staff member at the Israel Association for Ethiopian Jews (IAEJ). 'Ethiopians have lots of motivation to become Israelis, but they are not accepted,' he says. 'In jobs, in education, people feel they are discriminated against because they are black. I'm not saying it is right or wrong, but it is what we are feeling, and that is enough.' A low point in the relationship between Ethiopian Jews and Israelis came in 1996, when it was revealed that Israeli hospitals had thrown out all blood donated by Ethiopians. "These were donations to help other Israelis," Mr. Elias says. "[Ethiopians] said to each other: 'What do they think? That we are not humans?' Habad, one of Israel's stronger orthodox religious groups, doesn't recognize Ethiopians as Jews or allow their children into its kindergartens."

Corn Belt Estate Saga Pits Orthodox vs. Orthodox,
[Jewish] Forward, November 22, 2002
"The only two Orthodox synagogues in Des Moines, Iowa, are battling in court over the $240,000 estate of a late congregant who willed her fortune to both synagogues at separate times. The dispute is pitting the Orthodox Union-affiliated Congregation Beth El Jacob against the Judaic Resource Center of Chabad Lubavitch of Iowa. The two synagogues of different Orthodox stripes are located on opposite sides of the same block, bisected by a creek. They serve a tiny Orthodox community of a few hundred families in the state's capital. Beth El Jacob filed a lawsuit claiming the elderly Blima Fordonski was not of sound mind when she signed away her assets to the Chabad institution five years after bequeathing her estate to Beth El Jacob. Beth El Jacob is also demanding the second will be thrown out on technical grounds, including charges that the rabbi and president of the Chabad synagogue were invalid witnesses because they stood to gain from the will ... But outside of court, synagogue leaders are lobbing charges of deception and libel at each other in a Jew vs. Jew conflict that seems to be rocking the remote Orthodox community to its very core. In a city with a total Jewish population of 3,200, the two Orthodox synagogues count 230 families participating in services between them. Like the clash chronicled in Stephen Bloom's 2000 book 'Postville,' the dispute features a chasidic Chabad community in dispute with its neighbors in a small Iowa town. Unlike the book, however, the neighbors in this case are fellow Orthodox Jews. 'There are elements of Beth El Jacob who have waged a campaign of unfounded hate and defamation against Rabbi Jacobson and Chabad Lubavitch of Iowa,' said a board member of the Chabad synagogue, David Feder, '... I was raised in Texas in the early 1960s and by far the worst antisemitism I have ever encountered in my life has been in Des Moines, Jew against Jew.'"

Court Reverses Cincinnati Ban on Menorah Display,
ABC News, November 30, 2002
"A U.S. Supreme Court justice has struck down the city of Cincinnati's ban against a Jewish display of the menorah on a downtown square -- and all other religious exhibits -- during the holiday season. Justice John Paul Stevens ruled late Friday that the city may not enforce its restriction against such displays, which was designed primarily to block the Ku Klux Klan from erecting a cross on Fountain Square as it has several times during the Christmas season in the past. In upholding a decision Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Susan Dlott, Justice Stevens said the city was denying citizens' rights to use the square as a 'public forum.' Judge Dlott called it an 'offensive violation' of free-speech rights for the city to confine the use of Fountain Square to a city-sponsored display, including a huge Christmas tree, during the seven-week period ... When the Ku Klux Klan has put up Christmas crosses in the past, the city has been forced to protect them from protesters who have dismantled them on several occasions. Such disorders have discouraged people from shopping downtown, the mayor said. Chabad of Southern Ohio, the Jewish organization which sought to overturn the city restriction, had applied for a city permit to erect a 10-foot-high candelabrum known as a menorah during the eight days of Hanukkah, which began Friday."

Chabad's lost son,
by Yair Sheleg, Ha'artez (Israel), December 26, 2002
"Very few among Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidim know this story, and those who do go to great lengths to deny it. After all, it is not easy for the Hasidim to accept that Rabbi Moshe, the youngest son of the founder of their movement, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1902-1994) [sic: wrong century]- better known in Jewish history as the Ba'al Hatanya and the author of the Likutei Amarim Tanya, a basic book on Hasidic philosophy - converted to Christianity. In Eastern Europe of the last 200 years, conversion to Christianity was certainly not unheard of, and was most often motivated by a desire to alleviate the conditions of life - to find a job or be accepted to studies - or romance - falling in love with a non-Jew. But the conversion of a major Hasidic rabbi's son is certainly the most celebrated case. The story was first made public by Professor David Assaf, a lecturer in Jewish history at Tel Aviv University, in an article he published some two-and-a-half years ago in a journal called 'Zion.' According to Assaf's research, involving the study of a wide variety of Hasidic sources related to Christianity, Moshe converted at the age of 36, when he was already married and had children. Moshe was his father's favorite son and viewed as his father's successor. Despite Moshe's young age, he was appointed to the prestigious position of hozer - the one who repeats the rabbi's sermons for the Hasidim ... Assaf takes the view that Moshe's conversion to Christianity occurred as a result of mental illness. As he puts it: 'He lost his mind and then his religion' ... Assaf says that the sixth Lubavitcher rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Schneerson (1880-1950), was the first of the Hasidic movement's leaders who tried to contend with the story of the conversion by means of total denial."

With warmth and hard work, Chabad grows quickly on campus,
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Dec. 27, 2002
"'At Chabad we use a phrase, ‘Every Jew is family,' said Rabbi Hirsch Zarchi, 29, who heads the Chabad house at Harvard, where he is known to everyone as Hirschy. As Jewish organizations of all stripes wonder how to get young people more involved in Jewish life, Chabad’s approach appears to be working. Chabad is the 'fastest-growing Jewish presence on campus,' said an official with one Jewish organization. There currently are full-time Chabad houses on 61 college campuses across the United States. Chabad offers part-time programming at another 80 schools. The fervently Orthodox movement is in the midst of a new push to open full-time houses on another 20 campuses. Of those, 12 already have opened. The campuses targeted in the latest wave are those considered prestigious or that have large Jewish populations, and that have requested a Chabad house, according to Rabbi Menachem Schmidt, a member of Chabad’s campus executive committee and the Chabad representative at the University of Pennsylvania. The rationale was to find students with leadership potential and groom them into Jewish leaders, said George Rohr, the philanthropist who funded the initiative."

20 New Chabad Centers To Open on West Coast,
Lubavitch International
"Coming from San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and dozens of cities in between, 150 shluchim gathered last weekend for the 35th annual West Coast Chabad Shluchim convention at the Ontario Marriott. Appropriately themed Unity, the convention focused on the collective strength achieved through a unified, cohesive body of shluchim, working together towards the same goal of reaching every last Jew, and creating vibrant communities throughout the West Coast ... Prominent on the agenda, said Rabbi B. Shlomo Cunin, director of West Coast Chabad since its founding in 1965, is CAFA, or Chabad Action For America, a program that will link Chabad programs in California and Nevada to the new White House faith-based initiatives. CAFA will identify Chabad’s social service and outreach programs that might be eligible for the funding provided by the initiative so that 'programs that were previously overlooked because of their religious affiliations will now benefit from government funding, creating the possibility for further growth and establishing a paradigm for other Chabad centers across the nation,' says Rabbi Chaim Cunin, spokesperson for Chabad of the West Coast. In a gesture of solidarity with their fellow Jews in Israel, Chabad announced that it will work with the Israeli Consulate and the Israeli Ministry of Tourism to send Chabad rabbis to Israel, to offer much-needed encouragement and support. The first group is scheduled to travel to Israel at the end of February. The initiative, Chabad is hopeful, will in turn encourage members of the rabbis’ respective communities to do likewise, generating goodwill and support for Israel during these difficult times. To date, there are 180 Chabad-Lubavitch couples serving communities along the West coast in more than 100 centers, 25 day schools, and 30 summer camps. Topping off the conference announcements, Rabbi Cunin publicized plans to dramatically expand Chabad’s services in California by establishing an additional 20 Chabad centers here during the upcoming year, bringing the total number of centers serving California and Nevada’s Jews to 200."

Jewish Astronuat Takes Mitzvah Into Space,
Lubavitch International
"The Shuttle Columbia launched successfully this morning January 16, to the lively singing, of 'Oseh Shalom.' Hundreds of proud Israelis swelled with joy, having arrived from Israel to witness firsthand the launch of the Shuttle, which carries the first Israeli Astronaut, Col. Ilan Ramon. On hand to serve the Israeli guests is Rabbi Tzvi Konikov, Chabad-Lubavitch representative to the Space Coast, who has arranged for the only simultaneous translation in Hebrew of the live countdown coverage of the Shuttle Columbia launch ... Ramon, who consulted with Rabbi Konikov months ago (see lubavitch.com archives http://www.lubavitch.com/article.asp?ID=17)about how to mark Shabbat in space, had asked Rabbi Konikov for a dollar bill from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, which he carried with him on his mission. The dollar bill represents the mitzvah of tzedaka, charity-giving, which the Rebbe promoted by distributing dollars to all those who came to seek his blessing. The dollar bill was meant to be given to charity, but most people cherish the particular bill that was held by the Rebbe, preferring to give another one or more, in its place to charity."

Pnina Feldman Resources Debut on list Sydney,
Sydney Morning Herald (Australia),
"Joe Gutnick's sister Pnina Feldman, is one of the extraordinary events of 1997. Investors were tantalised by tales in the prospectus of her search for the 12 gemstones from the breastplate worn by the high priest in the Jerusalem temple more than 3000 years ago. Feldman, a member of the Lubavitch Jewish community, launched Diamond Rose on April 19, the birthday of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Schneerson, who is reported to have told Gutnick that the stones were in Australia. Diamond Rose includes 17 gemstone, precious and base-metal exploration tenements in north-western Australia."

Three years ago this Australian rabbi was a laughing stock. Now he controls companies worth $2.4 billion and is calling Israeli elections. "Diamond Joe" Gutnick and the Rebbe's prophecy,
By Matthew Schifrin, Forbes, December 2, 1996
"On his second visit to the U.S. after becoming prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu visited a small cemetery in Queens, N.Y., not far from Kennedy airport. There he paid respects at the grave of Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Rebbe (grand rabbi) of Judaism's ultraorthodox Lubavitcher sect. Netanyahu was paying a political debt. Escorting the prime minister was another Hasidic rabbi, Joseph Gutnick, a Schneerson disciple. But Gutnick is more than a rabbi. Little-known outside of Australia and Israel, the bearded, black-coated Gutnick, 44, has amassed a $400 million fortune in Australian mining. But for Gutnick, Bibi Netanyahu and his Likud Party would probably have lost the Israeli elections. The story begins in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1990, when Rebbe Schneerson became concerned about Israel's left-leaning politics. He summoned the wealthiest among his 200,000 followers - Joseph Gutnick - and made him his special emissary for the 'integrity of the land of Israel.' Lubavitchers and most other Orthodox Jews felt Israel's Labor government was giving too much to the Palestinians for too little in return. Gutnick reportedly spent millions campaigning against the Labor Party and for Netanyahu, who takes a harder line with the Palestinians. With money and propaganda from Gutnick, 5,000 Lubavitcher volunteers went door-to-door in Israel campaigning - especially among Russian immigrants ... After marrying the daughter of a wealthy Australian textilemaker, Max New, in 1974, Gutnick studied to become a rabbi at Lubavitcher headquarters in Brooklyn and returned to run a girls' seminary in Melbourne. But his father-in-law's business beckoned, and soon Gutnick found himself more interested in trading stocks than in making garments. He bought mostly mining shares and eventually accumulated enough large stakes to sit on more than a dozen boards, including that of gold mining company Great Central Mines. In the 1970s and 1980s Gutnick rode the boom in Australian mining stocks. By the mid-1980s he had built an initial $200,000 or so into over $100 million, but he then lost two-thirds of it when the Australian stock market collapsed in October 1987. 'I learned that cash flow assets are much more important than paper assets,' says Gutnick, whose Australian accent is right out of Crocodile Dundee. What he means is that paper assets can lose their value in a short time but income-producing properties keep money coming in day after day. To that end he invested in gold production at Great Central Mines. Unlike most religious Jews who believe in keeping a low profile, Gutnick understood the value of publicity. He began saying that Rebbe Schneerson had encouraged him to forge on after the crash by blessing him and assuring he would make major discoveries in gold and diamonds ... At home in Australia, Gutnick cuts a prominent figure. He has a city home and a beach home in Melbourne. A Bentley transports his wife and ten children around Melbourne. His name is frequently in the headlines, his face and voice on TV. He is courted by Australian politicians, including the prime minister." [More Gutnick family]

Synagogue wins at 6:06 a.m.,
Miami Herald, March 15, 2003
"After nine hours of fiery testimony, heated debate, dazed disbelief and audience catnaps, a city board decided early Friday to allow the Hollywood Community Synagogue-Chabad Lubavitch to stay in its Hollywood Hills location in a block of single-family homes. The decision came at 6:06 a.m. Homeowners who complained about noise, traffic and parking problems lost their battle to oust the house of worship from the midst of their residential neighborhood. The board voted 5-2 to give the Chabad a special exception allowing it to stay, with several conditions, including having them come back every three years for a review ... The board's decision is being questioned. Commissioner Sal Oliveri, a staunch opponent of the Chabad's request who attended the marathon meeting, said he will ask for an appeal and will challenge the board's decision. 'Their procedure was very irregular,' Oliveri said. `That has never been done before' ... In 2001, the Chabad was the focus of a 13-hour Hollywood City Commission meeting over whether the a synagogue should be allowed to stay in two houses at 2215 and 2221 N. 46th Ave. Commissioners gave the congregation a one-year pass. Last year, the Development Review Board voted to allow the congregation to stay at the site, with conditions, for an additional six months ... Jamie Mardis, a resident who presented evidence at the hearing, said he saw 127 people go into the synagogue recently. The rabbi disputed that number."

Press Release. Source: Mitzvah Tank Office Parade 53,
Yahoo! Financial News, April 10, 2003
"Chabad Lubavitch Headquarters, 770 Eastern Parkway. 53 mitzvah tanks will roll through the streets of New York City this Thursday to honor this century's most influential Jewish leader, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. This year on Thursday, April 10th 2003, people around the world will be celebrating the Rebbe's 101st birthday. Chabad Lubavitch will head this celebration with a motorcade consisting of 53 mitzvah tanks, which will parade throughout the streets of New York, spreading the Rebbe's message of goodness across the metropolitan area, as we stand shoulder to shoulder with our President in his fight against evil, and in solidarity with the Jewish community of Israel in their fight against Arab terrorism (please see www.truepeace.org). The 'mitzvah tank,' launched by the Rebbe in 1974, is a motor home that has been transformed into a synagogue on wheels. Unlike an army tank, which represents war and destruction, the mitzvah tank is meant to represent peace. The mitzvah tanks, armed with religious articles and manned by young orthodox rabbis, welcome all, regardless of race, religion or gender. Young and old are invited aboard the motor home and encouraged to do their part in making this world a better place. The mitzvah tanks travel across the globe, offering spiritual refreshment on the spot for people on the go. Their message of hope touches millions around the world ... World leaders such as Margaret Thatcher, Yitzchak Rabin, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Menachem Begin, listened to the Rebbe, learned from the Rebbe and honored the Rebbe. The Rebbe is involved in everything from women's rights to the Gulf War. Dedicating his life to helping others, the Rebbe spreads his simple message of increasing in acts of loving kindness and reaching out to anyone interested in learning what traditional Jewish life is all about, including teaching universal principles of morality to non-Jews. In 1995, President Clinton awarded the Gold Congressional Medal of Honor to the Rebbe."

Schools fight flight Small districts fear segregation, loss of aid,
by By KATHY A. BOLTEN, Des Moines Register, May 11, 2003
"Postville, Ia. - A growing number of white students are fleeing a handful of rural Iowa school districts that are home to meat-processing plants employing large numbers of immigrants. The exodus alarms school officials, who worry their districts will face the daunting task of educating predominately non-English-speaking students with dwindling financial resources. Students transferring from districts in which they live take with them the state's per-pupil financial aid, about $4,500 a student. Officials also fret that their schools will become segregated, with white students attending classes in neighboring districts while local classrooms are filled with minority students, most of whom are Hispanic. School board members in Postville - where one in five students belongs to an ethnic or minority group - took the unusual step last summer of adopting a voluntary desegregation plan that limits the number of white students who can leave the district. Desegregation plans were used predominately by large urban districts in the late 1960s and 1970s in an effort to equalize racial populations as whites fled cities to the suburbs ... Postville's desegregation plan took effect this school year. It is being challenged in Allamakee District Court by a white family whose request to send their daughter to a neighboring district was denied. The lawsuit's outcome probably will determine the fate of small Iowa districts faced with educating growing numbers of immigrant students ... According to the 1990 census, about 1,470 people lived in Postville, located in northeast Iowa. None of the residents was Hispanic, the census data showed. Ten years later, the city's population jumped more than 50 percent, to about 2,270, including about 470 Hispanics. In all, about 20 ethnic groups are represented in Postville. The growth was fueled by two meat-processing plants - Iowa Turkey Products and Agriprocessors, a kosher plant. Both have grown in recent years and have turned to immigrants to work in hard-to-fill jobs. Ten years ago, virtually no minority or non-English-speaking students attended Postville schools. This year, 20.9 percent of the district's students are minorities and nearly 25 percent are learning English. School officials in the past three or four years have noticed an increasing number of students leaving the district."

"In simple terms, we are at war. It is not a struggle merely for power, wealth, or some other material advantage; it is a titanic clash over the future of world civilization. The world must now choose, for all time, between the eternal holiness of the Messianic kingdom--for which Jews have tirelessly worked for thousands of years--and the utter nihilism of the darkest evil ever to threaten the planet. This war has already spread into every nation, every social institution, every human activity. It has thus become a world war in the ultimate sense. The Jewish people have the unique power of victory, to liberate the world from its current road to complete self-destruction ... The ancient nation of Amalek is condemned in the Torah as the ultimate personification of evil, a nation so full of hatred toward G-d and the Jewish people that it cannot be transformed into good, but must be utterly destroyed along with all traces of its influence. Rather than simply being ignorant of G-d, Amalek has a clear knowledge of its Creator, yet chooses to rebel against Him without any reason--not even for power, pleasure, wealth, or any other conceivable benefit. In this way, Amalek stands clearly apart from the other seventy gentile nations who, despite idolatry, immorality in general, and even anti-Semitism, nevertheless have the potential to be influenced by the Jews to become righteous gentiles who follow the Seven Noachide Laws. Amalek represents the ultimate barrier to the revelation of G-dliness within the physical world. Its descendants have, for thirty-three continuous centuries, carried on their scheming and machinations to rid the world of Jews and Jewish influence. The very presence of Torah in our realm represents an influence that refines and elevates the gentile nations and all physical elements, preparing for the day when Moshiach arrives to lead a purified world. The Amaleki conspire to send the Torah back into the heavens and reduce the world back to the darkest, most primitive state of idolatry and evil. But there is one major problem: Amalek has always been far too small and weak to defeat the Jews directly. It has suffered painful defeat in every battle it has fought openly against Israel. This forces Amalek to mobilize other gentile nations, who do not themselves bear an intrinsic hatred of the Jews, to wage war on his behalf ... More importantly, the Amaleki can only prey upon those gentiles who have not yet chosen actively to side with the Jewish people, the Torah, and the Seven Noachide Laws. But those gentiles who have consciously chosen to follow Torah halacha as it applies to them (without actually converting to Judaism) simply cannot be mobilized by Amalek. The Torah also teaches us that Amalek's methods involve pure deception and psychological warfare; only when the Jews are fooled can Amalek actually launch a physical blow ... In essence, the Torah is showing us that Moshiach cannot come until tile entire world--including the gentile nations--is ready. On the other hand, the gentiles are essentially ready now, requiring only a small Jewish effort to complete the task. The Jewish people and Amalek are waging a final struggle over the future of the gentiles; those whom the Jews fail to teach the Seven Noachide Laws will automatically fall into the hands of Amalek and its world revolution. Therein lies the key to reversing the "peace" process. The war, contrary to popular opinion, lies not in the land of Israel itself, but rather in the United States and other gentile nations. G-d is giving the Jewish people a tremendous opportunity to perform mitzvos and carry out a primary goal of Torah: To elevate and bring holiness into the gentiles, preparing them for the Messianic era when "on that day Hashem will be one and His name one"--meaning that all other religions will disappear, and the entire world will learn G-d's wisdom from the ingathered Jewish exiles in Israel, with Moshiach as the world's king. ...to bring Moshiach immediately. Judaism has always been a conquering religion, not for the purpose of converting gentiles to become Jews, but rather with the mission of returning the world to the universal covenant between G-d and Noah. For halachic reasons too numerous and detailed to list here, gentiles today who follow Christianity, Islam, or other religions are not, for the most part, "righteous gentiles" who inherit the World to Come. That status belongs only to those gentiles who carefully observe the Seven Laws of Noah, including following the halachic authority of the oral Torah and the rabbis. (For those who find the concept confusing, we hasten to point out that this is not part of a conversion to Judaism, nor even a step in the process. The Children of Noah have their own, independent role to play in assisting the Jewish people and refining the world. Those individuals who wish to convert may do so, but there is no such requirement. In the Messianic era, these righteous gentiles will worship in the Jerusalem Temple and celebrate certain Torah holidays, but will maintain a separate court system and not intermarry with Jews ... The very fact that Amalek can stir up such chaos in the world is proof that gentile society no longer presents true opposition to Jewish teachings. One now sees anti-Semitism only where Amalek is provoking trouble, which is precisely where gentiles are the most desperate for guidance. As Christianity spirals downward into strife and theological confusion, it becomes a vacuum unable to defend itself against either the lies of Amalek or the truth of Torah. Amalek can exploit the worldwide collapse of Christianity only by default--that is, only when the Jewish people do not seize the unprecedented opportunity. And as the Lubavitcher Rebbe has explained, by transforming the gentiles we can quickly create a vast army of supporters who will help us reveal Moshiach and bring all Jews back to the Torah. Specifically, the Rebbe has emphasized that the "peace process" in Israel will be defeated only through our influence on the gentiles--especially through the campaign to teach the Noachide Laws (see Sichos in English, vol. 16, [19 Kislev 5743]). Our most pressing task, to put it simply, is to launch an international Noachide revolution without delay. The process has already begun, with dozens of tiny Noachide communities having appeared throughout the United States, generally composed of former Christians who have abandoned that religion. The task of organizing the revolution can be divided into two broad stages: I) We must first create a new Noachide society as an international network of communities and organizations functioning inside, but separately from, the surrounding society (based on halachic requirements and directives, Noachide institutions function quite differently from their Christian and secular counterparts). This starts with an aggressive outreach program, by Jews and Noachides ...2) In the second stage, the growing Noachide movement will seize political power--using only peaceful, lawful means--in the capitals of the Western nations. This, of course, will not take place until the Noachide society has grown to some threshold size. We do not know how large this needs to be nor which nations will join the revolution first, although the United States, as a fairly religious, conservative nation, certainly tops the list of prospects. Upon seizing the reins of government, the new Noachide leaders will move quickly to implement a full agenda of reform. All economic and technological aid to the Communist Bloc, including the PLO, will be terminated immediately. Full support will be given to Israeli forces to reinvade PLO-controlled areas, with military assistance offered where necessary. Jewish courts (the batei dini of the rabbis) will be granted full legal sovereignty over Jewish citizens within each country, who will no longer be subject to the authority of gentile courts. The pre-existing Noachide judges and courts will replace the existing court system of each country, and the legal code will be drastically rewritten to conform to halacha; in the United States, the emphasis will be on restoring the authority of the Constitution and abolishing all unconstitutional government programs and agencies. The national debt will be foreclosed, probably by paying off creditors with government land holdings, thus averting economic disaster. And law and order will be fully restored through the establishment of internal security measures, again in accordance with Torah law. Almost as soon as aid to the Communist Bloc stops, the international Communist revolution will plunge headlong into crisis. The captive peoples, seeing their liberation at hand, will genuinely rise up to throw their brutal dictators out of power, and the armies of Gog and Magog--ranging from the Soviet Communists to the PLO--will self-destruct before the eyes of the entire world. Naturally, Amalek's agents will scream hysterically to intimidate Jews from carrying out the above campaign, hoping to delay this victory. They have no power, however, to prevent our successful action; they can only try to create doubts and hesitation. As the world plunges headlong toward the imminent revelation of Moshiach while the last walls of the exile disintegrate, the number of confused gentiles ready to change is rising exponentially ... It is not a matter of whether gentile society will explode in the face of the growing crisis; this event is an inevitable, and fast-approaching, reality. We do not want to miss this incredible opportunity to provide light in the final moments of darkness. The world has reached its ultimate point of decision, and the power to succeed belongs entirely to the Jewish people. We can wait until Moshiach comes on his own, following a world war, or we can bring him through our own actions, as the Lubavitcher Rebbe has stated is our mission. The choice is ours. There is not a minute to waste. Jews everywhere, unite!"

Ban the Web? Not Lubavitch Jews,
By Mike Kamber, Wired, Jan. 19, 2000
"Despite a recent Internet ban by a group of prominent Israeli rabbis, Brooklyn's Lubavitch Hasidim have no plans to scale back their extensive presence on the World Wide Web, a presence that now includes 700 Web sites in 52 countries. But the Lubavitch, the largest Jewish outreach group in the world, are concerned about a conflict with the ultra-orthodox rabbis and deny any contradiction between their decade-old Internet presence and the ban. "We're very sympathetic to [the rabbis'] concerns," says Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin, a Lubavitch spokesperson. These concerns revolve around the Internet acting as a conduit for pornography, particularly to Jewish children. But, unlike the ultra-orthodox, the Lubavitch emphasize the use of physical objects as tools to spread their word. "It's not the medium itself that is kosher or not kosher," Shmotkin explains. "It's how it is utilized." On a recent afternoon in Brooklyn's Crown Heights, Jewish men dressed in black and sporting the trademark fedoras and long beards of the Lubavitcher Hasidim rush in and out of the main synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway. Inside, dozens of men sway and chant prayers while off to one side dozens of young boys enthusiastically sing religious songs. Two exhausted Yeshiva students sleep with their heads resting on open books of Talmudic law. In a small room upstairs, the Lubavitch Internet team sits around a table, oblivious to the din below. These men and women are at the vanguard of harnessing the technology to promote evangelical Judaism. This effort has resulted in a worldwide network of virtual Jewish centers at chabadonline.com."

New Producers Join Chabad Telethon,
by Gaby Wenig, Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, September 5, 2003
"Chabad’s annual "L’Chaim — To Life!" telethon will look a little different this Sept. 14 since two new producers are helming the 23-year-old fundraiser. Barry Silver, who worked on "The Howie Mandel Show" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," and Michael G. Levin, who worked as a news producer for many years, have taken over production of the telethon from veteran producers Jeff and Jerry Cutler and associate producer Andrew Martin. The telethon, broadcast annually in August or September and watched by 20 million people nationwide, is Chabad’s largest fundraiser, bringing in more than $5 million for Chabad programs. While the funds raised at the telethon do not support already existing individual Chabad houses, they are used to support the establishment costs of new Chabad houses and the Chabad infrastructure in California, which includes a girls’ day school and a drug rehabilitation center. Over the years, the show has attracted A-list celebrities like Academy Award-winner Jon Voight and the cast of "Friends," who tout Chabad’s commitment to social justice causes and urge viewers to phone in their donations."

To designate March 26, 1991, as `Education Day, U.S.A.'
U.S. Congress Resolution - Enrolled as Agreed to or Passed by Both House and Senate --H.J.Res.104-- H.J.Res.104. One Hundred Second Congress of the United States of America. AT THE FIRST SESSION.
Begun and held at the City of Washington on Thursday, the third day of January, one thousand nine hundred and ninety-one Joint Resolution To designate March 26, 1991, as `Education Day, U.S.A.'. Whereas Congress recognizes the historical tradition of ethical values and principles which are the basis of civilized society and upon which our great Nation was founded; Whereas these ethical values and principles have been the bedrock of society from the dawn of civilization, when they were known as the Seven Noahide Laws; Whereas without these ethical values and principles the edifice of civilization stands in serious peril of returning to chaos; Whereas society is profoundly concerned with the recent weakening of these principles that has resulted in crises that beleaguer and threaten the fabric of civilized society; Whereas the justified preoccupation with these crises must not let the citizens of this Nation lose sight of their responsibility to transmit these historical ethical values from our distinguished past to the generations of the future; Whereas the Lubavitch movement has fostered and promoted these ethical values and principles throughout the world; Whereas Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, leader of the Lubavitch movement, is universally respected and revered and his eighty-ninth birthday falls on March 26, 1991; Whereas in tribute to this great spiritual leader, `the rebbe', this, his ninetieth year will be seen as one of `education and giving', the year in which we turn to education and charity to return the world to the moral and ethical values contained in the Seven Noahide Laws; and Whereas this will be reflected in an international scroll of honor signed by the President of the United States and other heads of state: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That March 26, 1991, the start of the ninetieth year of Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, leader of the worldwide Lubavitch movement, is designated as `Education Day, U.S.A.'. The President is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities."

Memorial for slain rabbi leads to confrontation,
by Mike Adler, yorkregion.com, Nov 27, 2003 Mike Adler
"'Kahane was right.' Those words on some portable signs, along with bitter memories of Rabbi Meir Kahane and his ideas, inspired dozens of Jews to picket a Jewish centre in Thornhill last week. But dozens of fellow Jews turned aside flyers declaring "hate and violence are not Jewish values", entering the Chabad-Lubavitch Community Centre to hear the late rabbi lionized as a prophet. Rabbi Kahane founded the militant Jewish Defence League in the United States and Kach in Israel, a party that campaigned for the forced expulsion of all Palestinians from Israel and its occupied territories. The rabbi also wanted Israel to be governed by Jewish religious authorities and hoped to ban marriages there between Jews and non-Jews. He was assassinated 13 years ago in New York City, but his followers still gather for annual memorial services, including at Chabad Gate, near Bathurst Street. Thursday, however, several rabbis and other Jews stood by the entrance, protesting what Rabbi Baruch Frydman-Kohl of Toronto's Beth Tzedec congregation called "the racist corruption of Judaism and Jewish teachings". The demonstrators, who carried signs with messages such as "Kahane not my hero", were there to show there are alternatives to Kach's ideas, Rabbi Elyse Goldstein said. The rabbi acknowledged there is a great deal of frustration in the Jewish community with the continuing violence of the Palestinian intifada or uprising. "But when people say things like, 'Let's kill them off,' That's not the voice of rational discussion," she said. "When you're frightened, one lashes out," said Rabbi Frydman-Kohl, whose son is serving in the Israeli army. He added, however, most Israelis still seek a peaceful solution to the conflict. "My son went on duty today in the West Bank and I'm here." Chabad rented its hall to Kahane supporters but is not affiliated with them and apparently removed signs advertising the event after receiving what one participant said were "hundreds" of angry calls. Inside the hall, about 75 people sat watching a video of Rabbi Kahane speaking to reporters at a media conference. A man turned it off and introduced himself as Meir Weinstein, former leader of the league in Canada and an admirer of Rabbi Kahane. "We believe he stood for the direction that Jews should be headed for, the right direction."

Israel Rules 'Treason' Label Rude But Legal,
By ERIC MARX, FORWARD, December 5, 2003
"Israel's attorney general has declined to bring incitement charges against 250 rabbis who signed a religious ruling branding liberal opposition leaders as traitors for their role in the Geneva Understandings. The decision not to prosecute was hailed by Orthodox leaders in Israel and the United States, many of whom were vehemently opposed to the peace initiative, led by former Israeli justice minister Yossi Beilin. The attorney general, Elyakim Rubinstein, said this week that the rabbis had engaged in unfortunate but legal behavior when they issued a religious edict branding the virtual peace pact an "act of treason" and urging that its negotiators be "brought to justice and declared outside the brotherhood of humanity." The rabbinic ruling, released to coincide with the Monday "launch ceremony" of the Geneva document, drew calls for a police inquiry from opposition Labor lawmakers Ophir Pines-Paz and Eitan Cabel. They argued that the rabbis were guilty of incitement of the sort that preceded the 1995 assassination of then-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. "This madness must be stopped right away," Cabel said. "This insane ruling paves the way for someone to kill those behind the Geneva Accord." The rabbinic ruling was sponsored by a non-profit organization, Pikuach Nefesh, whose leaders, Rabbi Yosef Goreletzky and Rabbi David Druckman, are described in Israeli press reports as prominent figures in the Chabad-Lubavitch chasidic movement. Pamphlets elaborating the ruling's theological underpinnings, published by Chabad, were disseminated this week to the public, according to a report in the daily Yediot Aharonot."

Why Torah obligates all Jews in this campaign: "...according to the known Jewish ruling that Christians are idol worshippers." (Likkutei Sichos 37:198) A gentile...is liable for the death penalty...if he has invented a religious holiday for himself...The general principle is we do not allow them to make new religious rituals and to make 'mitzvahs' for themselves by their own devices. Rather they may either become a Ger Tzeddek and accept all the Mitvahs; or he (the Noahide) should stand fast in his Torah (the seven Noahide Laws) without adding or diminishing...and if he does make some new 'mitzvah,' we lash him, punish him, and inform him that he is obligated with the death penalty for this..." (Rambam Mishne Torah—Hilchos Melachim 10:9) "...it is however obvious that if it will be perceived by them (the nations), also the matter of the negation of shituf, until they even have some recognition of the Unity of Hashem—that 'there is nothing else besides Him'; this will add both in their carefulness and meticulousness in fulfilling the seven Noahide Laws [with all of their ramifications!] and also in their aiding of Jewish people in all of their matters pertaining to Yiddishkeit and all of their needs in general..." (Likkutei Sichos 25: YudTes Kislev) "Any person who has already worked successfully in this area should try to influence other Jews to do likewise. Resistance should not deter one when attempting to influence a further individual to accept upon himself the task of disseminating the Noahide Laws amongst the nations." (Hisvaduyos 5750 2:18-19)"

[Oh dear! Chabad is claiming the city of Hollywood is discriminating against them! Discrimination against Jews! Poor things! What is Chabad? Here's what Moshe Greenberg (described by the periodical Conservative Judaism as "one of the leading scholars of Hebrew scripture in the world," formerly the Chair of the Department of Bible Studies at Hebrew University in Israel) wrote about Sefer Hatanya, the central works of Chabad hasidim: "What emerged for me, from the study of the first chapters of the book and their antecedents was the discovery that the main stream of Jewish thought is permeated by the genetic spiritual superiority of Jews over Gentiles, disconcertingly reminiscent of racist notions of our time. Living in Israel for the past twenty years in a Jewish majority that is no more sensitive to the feelings of minorities within it than Gentile majorities are.... [with] Jews in their midst, I have come to realize the vitality of Jewish racist notions, and I am more than ever convinced that the hold Judaism will have on this and future generations will be gravely impaired unless these notions are neutralized by an internal reordering of traditional values." [GREENBERG, p. 33] [Greenberg, Moshe. A Problematic Heritage: The Attitude Toward the Gentile in the Jewish Tradition: An Israeli Perspective. Conservative Judaism, v. "Feds investigating if Hollywood discriminated against Jewish sect,
by John Holland, World Wide Religious News (from The Sun-Sentinel, March 3, 2004)
"Justice Department lawyers are questioning past and current Hollywood employees, reviewing videotapes of commission meetings and examining building code records to determine whether the city discriminated against an Orthodox Jewish sect. Federal investigators plan to meet with top city officials and employees on March 24 to discuss the city commission's decision to stop the Chabad Lubavitch from worshiping in a residential neighborhood. They are focusing on whether the city treated the Chabad differently from other religious groups operating in single-family neighborhoods, particularly Rosa Lopez, who has turned her home into a shrine to the Virgin Mary without any interference from the city. The sides have been fighting since 2000, when the sect turned two private homes on 46th Street into a single house of worship. The city said the conversion violated zoning laws, and neighbors complained worshipers are noisy, leave garbage in the area and create a nuisance. On Oct. 17 the city ordered the Chabad to stop all services. Three days later, the Justice Department's civil rights division began investigating the case. City attorney Dan Abbott already has given four boxes of records and tapes to the Justice Department, including a list of all zoning violations issued over the past several years, records show. The Chabad contends that City Commissioner Sal Oliveri harassed them by ordering the city's code enforcement office to write hundreds of unmerited violations. Oliveri has been their harshest critic and led the city's charge to force them out. The city already has spent about $40,000 in legal fees on the case. On Tuesday, a lawyer for the Chabad said several large law firms are preparing to file a "significant'' lawsuit against the city. "We already have a draft and the discussions are very far along. We're just allowing the Justice Department to do its work or it would probably already be filed,'' said Franklin Zemel of Broad and Cassell. In 2000, Congress passed the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, or RLUIPA, designed to give religious groups power to fight local zoning ordinances. While cities can regulate locations for houses of worship, the restrictions must be limited and applied equally to all religions. Under RLUIPA, the federal government can sue the city if it finds discrimination. "If we do get sued under some kind of equal protection provision, the city would have a number of very solid defenses,'' Abbott said. One videotape under federal review is from a Sept. 12, 2001, meeting in which the commission gave the Chabad a temporary extension and raised questions of preferential treatment for Lopez, who says she receives monthly visits and messages from the Virgin Mary. Lopez has been operating for 10 years without a permit, once drawing thousands to her 1301 N. 66th Ave. home, where she still greets about 100 worshipers on the 13th of every month. On the videotape, Oliveri said Lopez should be exempt from zoning because her services are "a miracle'' to true believers and the venue can not be changed since the Virgin Mary visits that particular home. "If you people know anything about the Catholic religion, that's called a vision,'' Oliveri said at a packed meeting. "To Christians and Catholics, that's considered a miracle. That's not establishing a house of worship. That is a miracle.'' He later acknowledged that Lopez's services, which once grew so large that she put up portable toilets and needed police officers to direct traffic, had created a "disturbance.'' "The spiritual benefit that may be achieved by the people going there once a month far outweighs any inconvenience,'' Oliveri said at the meeting, drawing jeers from Chabad supporters and Mayor Mara Giulianti. Giulianti pounced on what she called unequal treatment, and said it could cause problems for the city in the future."

City refuses Chabad's request to remain in Hollywood Hills,

"As the clock inched toward 2 a.m. and debate dragged on over what to do with an Orthodox Jewish sect that worships in two small homes, city commissioners seemed weary of what they called the most divisive issue in Hollywood history. After two years of hearings, promises and testimony, the facts remained clear, even if a solution proved no easier Thursday morning than it ever did. The Chabad Lubavitch wanted to worship in the middle of a residential neighborhood, neighbors wanted to push them out and everybody said the law -- or their version of it -- was on their side. Then a young congregant pushed the argument away from law and toward religion in a way no one had done, appealing to the commission's Jewish members to ignore legal advice and vote with their hearts. "I think the Jewish people on this board have to stand up ... you're a Jew, you have to fight for who you are,'' said Zalman Korf, younger brother of the congregation's rabbi. The plea failed, and garnered scorn from some in the audience and on the commission. About 3:30 a.m., commissioners rejected the Chabad's bid to keep holding services in two small Hollywood Hills homes, giving neighbors the victory and setting the stage for a court appeal that will pit religious freedom against the city's right to decide its own zoning laws. "I'm sorry I'm going to have to vote against you, but I do,'' Commissioner Beam Furr said, casting what amounted to the deciding vote against the group's application for a special permit to turn two small homes in Hollywood Hills into a permanent house of worship. The final vote was 5-2, with Mayor Mara Giulianti and Commissioners Furr, Peter Bober, Sal Oliveri and Cathy Anderson voting against the Chabad, although Anderson was consistently on the Chabad's side and switched only after the results were assured to help unify the commission. The Chabad's leaders promised a quick appeal, and city officials said they would give the group time to find a new home and wouldn't rush to enforce the ruling ... They bought the properties at 2215 and 2221 N. 46th Ave., in 2000 with the intention of creating a central house of worship, but hid their intentions from the city early on, according to testimony. The Chabad moved to the neighborhood from a nearby strip mall on Sheridan Street. No issue has ever divided the commission or the city as deeply, commissioners said. The Chabad labeled many of their critics, particularly Oliveri, as intolerant or even anti-Semitic. Oliveri, long an advocate for keeping neighborhoods exclusively for single-family homes, argued the issue was about zoning and planning, not religion. "It's almost common sense and reasonable that the Chabad will never fit in Hollywood Hills,'' Oliveri sai ... Giulianti also was sympathetic toward the congregation, but bristled at suggestions by some that the vote reflected a tone of anti-Semitism in the city. "I've been elected seven times and I'm Jewish and they know I'm Jewish,'' Giulianti said to applause. From the beginning, city officials have argued that the Chabad, with at least 60 active members, was too large for the small parcel with two homes. The Chabad also has been circumspect about the total membership, with one senior administrator testifying Thursday morning that there were fewer than 200 total members from around the country. He later admitted he didn't include women and children in his total, putting the actual figure at well over 400 members. Nearby residents said they've counted well over 100 residents packed onto the tiny property during important Holy days."

[Jews get away with murder in Palestine and PUBLIC homage to Jewish racism in the United States. Chabad (below) is exemplary of (hidden) Jewish racism. A street in Los Angeles is now named for Rabbi Menachem Schneerson. Imagine if a street in Los Angeles was renamed "Ku Klux Klan Square."
The entire creation [of a non-Jew] exists only for the sake of the Jews."
-- Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, the chief rabbi of Chabad (who died in 1994), quoted by Brownfeld, A., Washington Report for Middle East Affairs, March 2000, p. 105-106

Chabad Brings Brooklyn to L.A,
by Gaby Wenig, Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, April 2, 2004
"Amid the kosher restaraunts, Judaica stores and storefront synagogues on a particular stretch of Pico Boulevard, a little piece of Brooklyn has just been built. OK, the new three-story, 47,000-square-foot brown-brick building is hardly little, but it is straight out of 770 Eastern Parkway, the Crown Heights address that houses the central Chabad center and the headquarters of their former spiritual leader, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, otherwise known as “the Rebbe.” After nearly 10 years, $10 million and lengthy negotiations with the city council and Pico neighbors, West Coast Chabad Lubavitch last Sunday inaugurated their new girls elementary school, Bais Chaya Mushka, named after the rebbe’s wife, and renamed the street — located between Doheny and Wetherly — ”Schneerson Square.” The March 28 dedication — which brought out notables like Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel Yona Metzger, actor Jon Voight, Mayor James Hahn, City Councilman Jack Weiss, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and state Education Secretary Richard Riordan, as well as greetings from President Bush and Gov. Schwarzenegger — demonstrates the West Coast religious organization’s tremendous fundraising powers and their presence in the city. While Chabad has always had a presence in Pico with its girls schools, middle school, high school and synagogues, it never dominated the street in the grandiose fashion it does now. The 770 replica (this is the seventh, including ones in Melbourne, Australia; Kfar Chabad and Jerusalem, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina and Westwood) is a fitting tribute to the rebbe, who sent emissaries all over the world to spread Judaism. One of those young emissaries was Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, the director of West Coast Chabad Lubavitch, who, since his arrival in the Chabad-less West in 1965 has peppered the city with 120 Chabads, and established himself as a figure to be reckoned with ... Chabad says that 80 percent of these students will be on a scholarship of some kind. ... Once the building was underway, Chabad had a basis to spearhead their other project: getting the city to officially recognize Schneerson, a project that was stymied by previous City Councils. Weiss and his staff spearheaded the legislation to rename the area. They first checked to make sure that city had named streets after religious leaders, so that Schneerson Square would not be an anomaly, and found streets named after bishops, like St. Andrews Place. Using those streets as precedents, the city dedicated the block to Schneerson in honor of his devotion to community, education and philanthropy."

Tangled up in Jews,
Jewish Telegraphic Agency [Breaking News], September 27, 2004
"Bob Dylan attended Yom Kippur services at a Chabad synagogue in Minnesota. The services were led by Rabbi Moshe Feller, the head of Lubavitch of Minnesota and a longtime acquaintance of Dylan. The cultural legend had an aliyah and was engrossed in the prayers, according to a participant who asked not to be identified. “He was a Jew who came to daven like everyone else,” the participant said. The music icon, who has attended services there before, became connected to Chabad through a childhood friend, who was close to Feller and who died in 2001, according to Chabad officials."

U.S. Newswire, October 11, 2004
"News Advisory: In advance of the Fourth Annual Conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement, the remains of a civilian passenger bus bombed by terrorists in Israel this year will be publicly displayed on Duke University campus this week by Chabad, a Jewish campus organization. This Friday, the Palestine Solidarity Movement, a group that seeks to whitewash Palestinian terrorism and vilify Israel, will hold its national convention at Duke University. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 12-13, Chabad of Duke University is hosting the Bus 19 Memorial Exhibit on Duke's West Campus on the Main Quad in front of the Duke Chapel. The bus itself is forty feet long and will stand silently on the quad, encouraging students, community members, and educators alike to spend a moment reflecting on the victims of this and other terrorist bombings in Israel and around the world ... Come see the effects of radical evil. Please come to the Campus Quad this Tuesday and Wednesday to stand with Israel and against terrorism by lighting a candle for the victims of this terrible tragedy. The Bus 19 Exhibit is being sponsored by Chabad of Duke University, and endorsed by Jewish Grads for Israel."

[Agriprocessors is the notorious Chabad slaughterhouse highlighted in Stephen Bloom's 2000 book, Postville, about the Chabad takeover over of that that town. And won't it be intriguing if Rabbi Chaim Kohn discovers, to his shock, that Hindus have it right about reincarnation, and the dear rabbi returns as a one-legged steer to be horrifically tortured in his own slaughterhouse. That's karma: what goes around, comes around -- a premise Jewry has apparently never grasped.]
Videos Cited in Calling Kosher Slaughterhouse Inhumane,
by Donald G. McNeil, Jr., New York Times, December 1, 2004
"An animal rights group released grisly undercover videotapes yesterday showing steers in a major kosher slaughterhouse in Iowa staggering and bellowing long after their throats were cut. The plant, run by AgriProcessors Inc. in Postville, Iowa, is being denounced as inhumane by the group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and by several experts on animal science and kosher practice. But the plant's supervising rabbi said the tapes were "testimony that this is being done right." And representatives of the Orthodox Union, the leading organization that certifies kosher products, said that while the pictures were not pretty, they did not make the case that the slaughterhouse had violated kosher law. The plant is the country's largest producer of meat certified as glatt kosher, the highest standard for cleanliness under kosher law. ("Glatt" means smooth, or free of the lung blemishes that might indicate disease.) Employing 600 people and selling under the popular Aaron's Best brand, it is the only American plant allowed to export to Israel. On the 30-minute tape, each animal is placed in a rotating drum so it can be killed while upside down, as required by Orthodox rabbis in Israel. Immediately after the ritual slaughterer, or shochet, has slit the throat, another worker tears open each steer's neck with a hook and pulls out the trachea and esophagus. The drum turns, and the steer is dumped on the floor. One after another, animals with dangling windpipes stand up or try to; in one case, death takes three minutes. In most kosher plants, animals are tightly penned while their throats are slashed, and the organs are not torn; tearing by the shochet is forbidden under Jewish law. In nonkosher plants, animals by law must be made unconscious before they are killed ... Federal law views properly conducted religious slaughter as humane, and so allows Jewish and Muslim slaughterhouses to forgo stunning. But the rules outlaw leaving animals killed that way conscious "for an extended period of time." Rabbi Chaim Kohn, of the AgriProcessors plant, says the steers feel nothing, even as they struggle on the floor and slam their heads into walls. "Unconsciousness and the external behavior of the animal have nothing to do with shechita," he said. Because the throat-tearing happens after the shochet's cut, the rabbi said, it does not render the animal nonkosher. Other experts in kosher law were divided on the issue. Rabbis Menachem Genack and Yisroel Belsky, the chief experts for the Orthodox Union, which certifies more than 600,000 products as kosher, including Aaron's Best meats, said the killings on the tape, while "gruesome," appeared kosher because the shochet checked to make sure he had severed both the trachea and esophagus ...But a spokesman for Shechita U.K., a British group that defends ritual slaughter against the protests of animal rights advocates, said after watching the tape with a rabbi and a British shochet that he "felt queasy," and added, "I don't know what that is, but it's not shechita." The spokesman, Shimon Cohen, said that in Britain an animal must be restrained for 30 seconds to bleed, and no second cut is allowed. Done correctly, Mr. Cohen said, a shochet's cut must produce instantaneous unconsciousness, so AgriProcessors' meat could not be considered kosher. Asked how top authorities could disagree over such a fundamental issue, he replied: "Well, we don't have a pope. You do find rabbis who interpret things in different ways." Dr. Temple Grandin, a veterinarian at Colorado State University who designs humane slaughter plants, viewed the tape last week without knowing the location. She called it "an atrocious abomination, nothing like I've seen in 30 kosher plants I've visited here and in England, France, Ireland and Canada." Dr. Grandin said the throat-tearing violated federal anticruelty law. "Nothing in the Humane Slaughter Act says you can start dismembering an animal while it's still conscious," she said ... The plant is at the center of a 2000 book, "Postville: A Clash of Cultures in Heartland America," by Stephen G. Bloom, which described the tensions in the tiny farming town between residents and Hasidic Jews from Brooklyn who took over its defunct slaughterhouse in 1987."

PETA Undercover: Terrified Cows Stagger to Their Feet After Workers Rip Their Throat. Investigations Reveal Slaughter Horrors at Agriprocessors,
GoVeg
"Every day, hundreds of animals endure unimaginable cruelty at an Iowa slaughterhouse. Maybe after seeing the fear and pain on the faces of the animals we captured on videotape, you will go vegetarian and persuade family and friends to join you. If you are already vegetarian or vegan, there’s still a lot you can do to help. And please don’t think that if you don’t eat kosher meat, this doesn’t apply to you: Kosher slaughter is more than twice as well regulated as conventional slaughter and is supposed to be more humane. Also, most meat from kosher slaughterhouses is sold as conventional, not kosher meat ... Kosher slaughter is supposed to be kinder and quicker than standard slaughter methods, but our latest investigation shows that, at least at one kosher slaughterhouse, that is definitely not the case. PETA's Request for Reforms Go Unheeded ... In early 2003, PETA received complaints alleging violations of kosher and federal law at AgriProcessors, the world’s largest glatt kosher slaughterhouse and the producer of Rubashkin’s and Aaron’s Best meats. In May 2003, PETA wrote to officials at the company and asked them to investigate and take steps to make certain that cruelty was not occurring there. We suggested that the plant hire Dr. Temple Grandin, the country’s leading slaughter expert, who has helped advise on matters of kosher slaughter systems, to advise them on how to avoid some of the worst abuses. AgriProcessors had its attorneys write back to us asserting, “Kosher slaughter is being conducted in accordance with the letter and spirit of Jewish law, which prescribes the most humane treatment of animals that has been known throughout human history.” The tone of the letter was not persuasive, so we took a look ourselves ... AgriProcessor workers ignore the suffering of cows who are still sensible to pain after having their throats slit by the ritual slaughterer. The animals stagger and slip in blood while their tracheas dangle from their necks ... Watch the five-minute video ... Watch the full-length video."

EPA files suit against Agriprocessors,
by Orlan Love, The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), November 1, 2004
"The Environmental Protection Agency filed suit Wednesday against Agriprocessors Inc., claiming the Postville meat packer has repeatedly exceeded limitations on the pollutants it can legally discharge from its plant into the municipal wastewater treatment facility. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Cedar Rapids, alleges that Agriprocessors has repeatedly violated the federal Clean Water Act and related pre-treatment regulations by exceeding limitations on total flow, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and chloride. The federal government seeks an injunction against further violations and unspecified civil penalties. The suit also alleges that discharges from Agriprocessors have caused the city to violate effluent limits specified in its wastewater discharge permit. It also alleges that Agriprocessors failed to meet reporting requirements for anhydrous ammonia used at the plant ... Agriprocessors, Allamakee County's leading employer with more than 600 workers, came under attack earlier this week when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, urging the agency to prosecute the kosher and standard meat processor for alleged violations of the federal Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act."
